Sorry if I offended anyone. 911 is Theron line to the police fire and ambulance here. It is used for emergencies and non emergencies alike. (I have checked this with a police officer btw) I assumed it was the same there. Good to know!
Freesia123: I have to ask where you live as I find that hard to believe? In Calfornia you can be cited with a misdeamenor criminal offense for calling 911 for a non-emergency (meaning life threatening circumstance or in-progress crime, parking is not a crime, parking is a vehicle code infraction). Of course people are rarely issued citations for this unless it is habitual, but I can tell you that most 911 operators will inform the caller that it is not appropriate to use 911 and will provide the appropriate 7-digit phone number to dispatch.
Just to give you an example, if all 911 operators are on the phone with emergencies & 911 rings someone has to put their call on hold (so someone providing life saving medical instructions or getting information in a suspect currently trying to break into a house) to answer that 911, and if it is not truly an emergency that is a HUGE dis-service to those who truly have emergencies.
And 911 centers only have a limited number of 911 lines - if all lines are busy, including people with non-emergencies, someone calling 911 with a true emergency (needing CPR instructions, heart attack, child missing, etc.) will get a busy signal. This is why I find it hard to believe that your local agency is okay with it.
I would actually highly recommend that you call your local 911 center on their non-emergency number and speak with a DISPATCHER to confirm if 911 is okay to use for non-emergencies.
Sorry for my soap box speech, but the number of people who call 911 for non-emergencies is actually huge. I was quite pleased to see so many people post that it is not appropriate use of 911 for parking complaints (though I have a sneaking suspicion some of you are LE!)
