What would have you staying up late for growing up?

I don’t remember anything when I was real young. As I got a little older maybe the Johnny Carson show, at least on Friday nights.

First time I stayed up late was for the lunar landing in July 1969. I was 12 at the time. Stayed up all night.

Saturday Night Live. On Fridays and various breaks from school I'd stay up for Nightline and Late Night with David Letterman. Needed some time to adjust when I had to get back to school.

I also remember when my local TV station had Benny Hill at 11 PM. I don't think my parents would have approved, but they were already asleep. Later that station had the uncensored Showtime (not CTV) version of Bizarre at the same time slot. I definitely don't think my parents would have approved. But apparently some nudity was allowed that late within the FCC's rules.

During the summer (any time I did not have to go to school basically), I would stay up to see stuff like "The Tonight Show", I would even stay up late enough to see David Letterman every now and then. I would also watch Saturday Night Live. Also I would stay up kind of late for some radio shows (back in the day they had those ones where you could call in). :rotfl2:

If there was a "sleepover", we usually stayed up all night.

I do remember staying up very late once to finish listening to a Dodgers game. Otherwise, even then, I was not in general, a night owl.

Reading. When I was about 7 my mom gave up on giving me a bedtime because she said reading under the covers with a flashlight would hurt my eyes and knew better than to keep me from books.

We always wanted to stay up late to watch the Donny and Marie show, The Love Boat and Fantasy Island 🤣

When I was 12, my friend got the Nintendo Wii (when it was still really difficult to get). We stayed up all night playing it.

Other than that, New Year's Eve was the big night. All the parents and kids in the neighborhood had a party and stayed up well past midnight.

I was not allowed to stay up late most nights. My parent-decided bedtime was 8pm well into middle school. (And would often get in trouble for reading after "lights out.") However, on Friday nights, I would often be allowed to spend the night at my cousins' house on a Friday night. They had MTV and Atari (we had neither of those things). We would stay up late watching MTV. I so loved MTV back then.
