What will YOU do to be a ‘courteous cruiser’……

1] I will thank my servers and room stuard daily to let them know that I appreciate their service. And leave positive remarks for them on the comment cards at the end of my cruise.

2] I will offer to take a picture for someone with their camera so their entire family can be in the picture

3] I will not save more than one seat (for my better half) at the theater. If other's in my party need a seat, they will have to represent themselves.

4] Have respect for your fellow dining companions and the waitstaff and arrive on time
for dinner.

5] Always, ALWAYS set aside enough money for tipping the hardworking staff who help make your cruise experience a wonderful one!

6] Please show up for the muster drill on time. Two thousand people don't appreciate standing in the hot sun waiting for you to stroll along 20 mins late.

7] If I see a ‘saved’ pool chair beside me unoccupied for a very long amount of time – I will remove the towel and offer it to someone who is distraught looking for an empty chair.

8] When I use my refillable ‘free’ mug or just order water in the bars or nightclubs, I will still leave a tip for my hardworking server.

9] I will offer to pick something up for my room stuard or servers during my trip on the island – knowing that they do not get very much free time during the week to run their errands.

10] I will refer everyone I meet on the cruise to the DIS Boards so they can become ‘friendly, well informed’ cruisers too!

Great post! It is such a good idea to ask if you can pick something up on the island for your stuards and servers. I wouldn't have thought of that.

How do you tip when you refill your drink mugs? Do you bring cash for this or do you have to charge it to your room?

I'll take the stairs so those who need the elevator can use it.

I'll be sure to mention by name on the guest comment card those crew members who made the trip extra magical.

I won't sweat the small stuff.

When I know that I'll be using my mug or requesting ice water (both no charge) - I bring along a few 'bills' to use for tipping. Same with going to Palo Tea where it is 'free' and no slip is presented to sign -- bring along a few extra bills to show your appreciation to the server.

1. We will pick up after ourselves in our stateroom. My hostess is there to make sure that my room is clean........NOT BE MY MOTHER!!!

2. We will always treat all WAIT STAFF with Kindness. Not bark orders as if they were our personal slaves. (it killed my husband to see how people often treated the help, we have a difficult time being WAITED ON)

3. Remember that there are also 2400 OTHER people on board, and they would all like a chair, seat or Hammock Too!

4. Monitor our Children.......We would all like to think that they are ALWAYS wonderful, but, in groups they can be misled. Are they tying up elevators and stairwells? Are they knocking on doors and running? Are they being OBNOXIOUS in the theatres so that others can't watch the movies? (we witnessed these incidents first hand on our last cruise) Trivial things can often become major when the wrong person complains.

Hi Patty -
I just loved your 1st comment - didn't you wonder why I was bringing MY mother along with me this time?! (HAHAH! I am too awful for words somedays!)

Also, I think all the comments were excellent - especially about being KIND to the wait staff and stateroom hosts. When my Grandmother came to America, her job was chambermaid - my mother raised me to leave a good tip for the maids even when I was only spending one night in a hotel while on the road.

I agree completely about controlling your kids. I watch in amazement at parents watching kids run and yell down hallways at midnight while people are trying to sleep. I realize my kids aren't always going to listen or be quiet when they should, but at least my wife and I make an attempt to respect other people. This isn't only on cruises, but hotels as well.

What a wonderful post! I can only hope most of those on my cruise will read it. Any suggestions for slipping this thread under EVERY single door on the cruise ship?

I'd like to add:

"I will always dress appropriately. For dinner, I will not wear my beach clothes. When by the pool or at the beach (adult section or not), I will not act like it's a nude beach."

"I will not act like a spoiled brat. That means I will not hold the auction clipboard so know one else has a fair chance. I will not demand that the ship wait while I play a slot machine or shop just a little bit more."

I would not videotape the shows. When taping is allowed I would not hold my arm straight up in the air and leave that display screen on.

Follow the dress code. Men should at least wear slacks and nice polo type shirt. I look at cruises as an adult's turn to play dress up. Go with it. I understand why some men don't like to wear neckties but you can still wear a jacket.

Let's all remember something simple that all of our moms taught us. Say PLEASE AND THANK YOU. I hate it when people don't say it to the wait staff as drinks are brought out or dinner is served, whatever. Thank you is so appropriate for the stateroom host/hostess, too. Actually, anyone who helps you. Please and thank you seems to be a lost art. Don't forget eye contact with the cast member, also.

We will have a discussion with our kids before we go on proper behavior...generally my kiddos are pretty well behaved, but they are by far not perfect...we will remind them to let people OFF the elevator before entering ( and not pushing)..not running around and respecting all adults and fellow children cruisers. Also, rules are rules, whether they are ages in certain pools, dinner dress etc. Although it is hard for kids to understand, just because others do not follow them, our family will. We like to remind them to always treat others like they themselves would like to be treated....hopefully some of our talk will stick!!!

I will talk to my DD to let her know that being able to go on a cruise is a privilage and I will talk to her about being kind to others on board and those waiting on her.

I will be patient with my wait staff even when things do not go quite as smoothly as I think they should. After all I am on vacation...

Seriously, I will remember to be grateful that I get to go on this wonderful vacation and if everything doesn't go just perfect, that millions of people would be happy to trade with me. I should smille and be happy because really I am.
