What will you be cooking for Thanksgiving?

I've been thinking about how to 'do' Thanksgiving this year. My feeling is, this is a major holiday that does only comes once a year, and it's worth stretching the eating plan for. However, I don't want to blow my progress altogether, and more than that, I'm perfectly aware that it's been so long since I've eaten sugar- and carb-rich foods that they'd leave me feeling wretched afterwards.

So, what I'm thinking is this: roast a turkey, of course. Make my bread stuffing as usual, but instead of making a vat of it as I normally would, just make enough to stuff the actual bird. Make mashed potatoes, as an extremely rare treat. Make a sweet potato dish, but look for a different recipe than the whisky-glazed ones I've made before. Prepare a salad with a red wine vinaigrette and pumpkin seeds. I've done a corn pudding in previous years, but I'll look for a different vegetable dish.

Dessert -- I'll try out a couple of Phase 3 recipes from the South Beach Cookbook. There are a couple of cheesecakes that are possibilities, and a flourless chocolate cake. One dessert would do, and then maybe some thin dark chocolates to set out.

What changes, if any, are you thinking about making this year?

I'm making my usual, minus any heavy carbs. I'll make low carb brownies for dessert. For my cornbread dressing, there is a brand out there that is wonderful, they are the same people who make the brownies. I'll also have turkey, green beans, faux mashed potato, sweet potato's for my husband, brocolli with cheese. No rolls for us though, the cornbread dressing will be enough. I'll probablly make a low-carb cheesecake also.

Now I've gone and made myself hungry.

I'm on an eating sensibly - calorie counting plan so for me when special days like this come along we eat at my IL's and I go "off plan" for the day and then get right back on plan the next day. ::yes:: I think however if you can incorporate more healthy dishes into your Thanksgiving dinner that's great. ::yes:: I know if you are on a specific plan like low carb that the effects of eating things you aren't used to can leave you feeling pretty bad so I don't know if my way would work for everyone but I look at it as a chance to get used to my life after weight loss and how I will handle situations once I'm in maintenance. ::yes::
P.S. I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking of the holidays- I just can't wait! :Pinkbounc

How Funny! DH and I were just discussing this! We go out for Thanksgiving - as I am the family cook and like to take a break every once in a while. A nice tradition we started about 3 years ago. So, we'll go to the Outback and have a nice Low-Carb steak!

For Christmas, I'm going to make a turkey, ham & possibly a filet mignon roast. For the TONS of family coming - I'm asking their help this year and THEY are making the high carb dishes. I don't have any trouble skipping them, as long as I don't make them! I also plan to make a low-carb pumpkin cheese cake for dessert.

The potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, mac & cheese, rolls & pies will be made by others. We'll all share the left overs and I won't be tempted!

Instead of concentrating on FOOD this year, I'm going to make a really nice table setting. Candles, greenery, the works!
