Hi all,

I was thinking of going to Shanghai Disney on opening. Do you know what attractions won't be open? Thanks!

the rumor (again RUMOR) is the park will open with limited attractions and areas open.

The rumor mills on the internet are suggesting that the park (and everything it has to offer) will be fully open around October.

Disney does not (and can not afford) to push the opening date back anymore.

again this is all rumor and speculation (at this point)

Pretty much every theme park opens with a debt. Disneyland opened way over budget in 1955. I don't know specifics but I'm sure WDW wasn't easy as pie either.
I have no idea what the initial budget for WDW was, but the total cost just prior to the October 1, 1971 opening was $400 million. That included the Magic Kingdom, Contemporary, Polynesian, Fort Wilderness, and the two golf courses.

Thanks. I'd be interested to know what the initial budget was. I do believe Epcot was overbudget as well.

I'm going on memory on this info so it may not be 100% accurate. The initial budget for Epcot Center was around $800 million. By the time the park opened in 1982, the estimates were that Disney had invested between $1.2 and $1.4 billion.

When Epcot Center opened, there were just five pavilions in future world: Spaceship Earth, Universe of Energy, World of Motion, Journey Into Imagination, and the Land. The park also opened with nine pavilions in World Showcase.

Id be surprised if Paris even turns a profit these days.... Thank God Disney bought most of it and giving it a much needed refurb

As far as I understand Paris is actually doing quite well these days. Or at least they reported record revenues back in 2015, and they still remain the most visited theme park in Europe. The issue with Paris right now is that the increasing labor costs and investment on park refurbishment offsets the performance of the resort as a whole. And yeah, Walt Disney Studios is still nowhere near as popular as DLP is.

I think they are probably more concerned about Hong Kong right now.

Paris is on its way back to being a revenue generator. Lots of work there is giving that park new life.

Hong Kong could be problematic. A second park was in the works but was shelved due to Shanghai problems and the Chinese economy.

I went to Paris for the first time last September and was totally blown away by the ambiances and theming of DLP. No there isn't as much to do as the US counterparts, but the park itself is absolutely beautiful. Studios on the other hand is clearly going to need a DCA overhaul with some Star Wars loving if they want to make that park great. I've never seen such a cheap product with a Disney name on it. They have some good rides: TOT, RRC, Ratatouille is amazing and Crush Coaster, but beyond that, the park is sort of a dud and a half day park, at best. The cast members on a whole are very French and not to the level of their US counterparts. I accept that cultural difference and was desensitized by a week of Paris before arriving at Disney. I will say that I waited no longer than 20 min for any attraction with most being a walk-on! Maybe they do some serious attendance numbers in the warmer months of the years, but not when I visited in September.

Hong Kong, I hear, needs more help though, so who knows how long it'll be until we see some massive changes at DLP resort. Too much going on at every other park around the world right now!

DLP is undergoing massive changes as we speak.

What are they doing besides Referbs? Star Tours 2.0? Anything else?
Massive refurbs really. They are adding new vehicles and things to space mountain. They are rebuilding things, they just reopened small world from a massive redo. The studio tour is getting some new additions.

The French are... French. Customer service isn't something they do for Disney or anyone else. :D

Not only do they generally end up way over-budget, but this would hardly be the first Disney park to open incomplete.

*cough* Disneyland *cough*
True but I think most give them the benefit of doubt on disneyland because it was the very first theme park really. Walt didn't know what he was getting into no one did really.

Honestly I think he's mostly given a pass because people view him as a "creative genius" and it's okay to repeatedly bring your company to the brink of bankruptcy in that case.

When it's a bunch of accountants, suddenly we don't feel so generous. :D
