We have been hoping that flights would be out already for September but sadly they are not (southwest). We normally go Tues - Tues cuz flights are cheaper however the way other airlines are looking that may not be the case. We were thinking of booking monday thru thrusday so that we get the room we really want/need. What would happen to our points from the extra days when we cancel them, as soon as flights are out? Would they just go back into our account or in holding? Thank you.

Before 31 days, does that mean if we used borrowed points they would rent to the year they were borrowed from? Sometimes I am dense and I want to understand for other times too (if we ever had to cancel).

If you borrowed points and you cancelled. The borrowed points do not go back to where they came from. They become this years points.

You probably already know this but Southwest will open their schedule through Oct 31 on March 3. So you have just over 3 weeks to go before you can book your flights.

I frequently book more nights than I need and then decide later which to keep. I also think you have a booking advantage if you book a stay starting Friday or Saturday since many people book arriving Sunday. For example, for my stay at VGF in May, I booked Saturday to Friday. Decided to arrive Sunday and cancelled the Saturday night. The points went back into my account as usual (they were not banked or borrowed points).

If you borrow points, can you use those points before your regular points? My point being, could you use the borrowed points and then have this years points available to bank into next year?

For example, you have 100 points and borrow 100 from next year to hold a 200 point reservation. Then you cancel half the days and return 100 points to your account. In order to not lose the borrowed points, you use them and return this year's points which can be banked. Does that work?

Yes you can do this- in fact the borrowed and banked points should be used first automatically but I would check with MS when cancelling to make sure that is what they do.

I do this as well when booking my room further out than flights are available yet.

This is how it has always worked for me. But I agree check with MS before you cancel.
