What?? Why on would they be denied??

I wonder if that might be the kind of thing that drove a lot of us to adamantly object when President Bush started giving state money to religious organizations ?

Bingo!

I have always lived in heavily Catholic northern cities, it is easy to forget that people actually discriminate against us.

Ya think? :confused3 Gotta love religion....

The statement of faith seems to indicate that any couple must rely solely on Jesus as a means to forgiveness. Since the Catholic Church includes prayers to Mary and other Saints, they might view this as not relying strictly on Jesus for redemption.

On a side note.......should this type of religious (or any) discrimination be allowed by a agencey that recieves state dollars?
No but I believe that the article indicates that the agency does not receive state money. The money from the sale of the license plates is not state money but an additional surcharge on the fee for the license plate that is collected and distributed to various agencies by the state. Since these are additional funds and not earmarked state money, they are not bound by state regs

Huh. I guess I thought that since it was part of the DMV that it was state money. :confused3 Okay, then nevermind my question.

You mean the people who were already discriminating on the basis of religion are doing it again? What a shock!!!

I use to post on the Bethany boards - USE to. What it comes down to is that many Christian religions do not consider Catholics to be Christian. And Bethany is a Chrisitian organization and therefor can choose to not allow this couple to adopt.

Wow--I never new that! I had always figured Catholics unquestionably fell under the Christian umbrella.

Not trying to start a debate, but would mind explaining why? I'm honestly curious. Is it because of the veneration of Mary? Is that considered too far from the traditional definition of the triune God?

I went and read the "Statement of Faith," and to be honest, as a Catholic, I really don't know where there is any conflict-- it does say that only Jesus can forgive our sins, but even though we have Saints and Mary that we may pray to, I was taught (in Catholic school), that it is ultimatly Jesus (God) that does the forgiving and "saving"-- so, I have no idea!

I was told by a "Christian" once, that because I was Catholic, I wasn't a "real Christian," and she wanted to "save me." I turned and walked away.
