I thought last year was a pretty good year for movies, but strangely enough I found myself enjoying a lot of smaller films than the big blockbusters.

Now there are a few films I need to see, such as Rush, Her, Lone Survivor, Inside Llewyn Davis Frozen, Saving Mr. banks and 12 Years a Slave.

But here's my top ten of what I saw:

1. Captain Phillips
2. Gravity
3. Wolf of Wall Street
4. American Hustle
5. Mud
6. Fruitvale Station
7. Prisoners
8. Man of Steel
9. This is the End
10. 42

Honorable mentions to: The Place Beyond the Pines, Monsters Unversity and Oblivion

Philomena was probably my favorite.

I also really liked Catching Fire, Saving Mr. Banks, and Gravity.

Frozen was good for a computer animated movie (not my favorite type of movie). Monster's University was okay.

I liked Oblivion okay, but hated Elysium.

Dallas Buyers Club and The Invisible Woman were okay, but I don't ever need to watch them again. I don't enjoy watching gritty like the first or adultery like in the second.

I saw but can't remember anything about the Star Trek movie that came out.

I really want to see The Way Way Back.

A friend and I are trying to see all the Best Film nominees, except I have no desire or plans to see the Wolf of Wall Street. So far we've just seen the three that I've mentioned already.

Escape from Tomorrow was probably the most memorable and definitely the most bizarre that I saw.

ETA: Prisoners was also pretty good.

We don't see too many while they are still in the theater, but I liked (in no particular order)

Saving Mr. Banks
Frozen
Captain Phillips
Despicable Me 2
Prisoners

Of the ones I have seen so far, these are the movies I enjoyed. I tried to watch This is the End last night and oh my gosh, couldn't get beyond the naked butt in the bathroom!

1. Star Trek Into Darkness
2. Warm Bodies
3. World War Z
4. Oblivion
5. The Hobbit
6. Despicable Me II
7. Saving Mr. Banks
8. Beautiful Creatures

Loved Catching Fire, Thor- The Dark World, Iron Man 3, Despicable Me 2, Monsters University and World War Z.

Loved a lot of films this year.

Gravity
Catching Fire
The Hobbit
American Hustle
Thor
42
Captain Phillips
Star Trek
Saving Mr. Banks

/
Fast & Furious 6
Despicable Me 2
Now You See Me

Frozen and Man of Steel were "good", not great
Monsters University sucked HUGE letdown after the original.

Why no Wolf of Wall Street, Krista?

From what I've read there's way too much sex and drug use for my taste. I just don't enjoy watching that. There was really too much of that in Dallas Buyers Club, too, but I suspect Wolf may be worse.

Ah, I understand! There was a lot of sex and drug use. A lot of my friends have been hesitant to see Wolf because of the length (three hours without previews), but I can honestly say it zipped right along and I never checked my watch and thought "Dear Lord when is this going to END?!?". Lol! I really did enjoy it, so much so, I downloaded the book and read it after I saw the movie. We saw American Hustle right after Wolf and that moved at a glacial pace in comparison. I did enjoy that too.

I do want to see Dallas Buyers Club, if I can find a darn theater that is showing it :headache:

Truthfully 2013 was such a bland year for movies. Nothing really memorable at all, and the award nominees/winners don't even register for me as something I've just got to see.

So, with that said, the best movie I saw from 2013, and mainly because it was just so beautifully shot (rather than pure content), was Stoker.

Aaaaaaand, I realized I never gave my favorites :duck:

In no particular order:

Catching Fire
Wolf of Wall Steet
American Hustle
Fast 6
Fruitvale Station (even though this one made me "Kim Kardashian ugly cry")
The Butler
The Heat (I swear I nearly peed my pantaloons from laughing!)

I only saw two movies in theaters last year. I loved both of them Thor the Dark World and The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug

The Way Way Back

In A World

Stories We Tell.

Before Midnight.

More but I can't think. Brain's gone. :sad2:

Oh I liked About Time.

EDIT: Just saw Enough Said - loved.

And This Is The End just killed me, because I had no clue. :rotfl2: Just like Ted, when I saw it. :thumbsup2 :lmao:

Thought I would have seen Fruitvale Station, Wolf of Wall Street, Philomena, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska and Mud but haven't got around to them.

Very unusual year for me to see so many movies, not to mention having seen so many in contention for Academy Awards.

It is a Disney board, so I'll first mention that I saw Frozen and Saving Mr. Banks and was charmed by both. Frozen is the first animated movie I've seen in several years & I was pleasantly surprised, although I do wish they had fleshed out a bit of the story here and there. The opening sequences really made me see it taking place on a Broadway stage.

Some of the others that were memorable, most since November, are:

American Hustle
The Wolf of Wall Street
Dallas Buyer's Club
The Way, Way Back

For anyone who might be interested, DD just told me over the weekend that she saw The Way Way Back at Costco for $10, and it was in a collection with another movie she didn't know. It's a quiet movie with a lot of heart and it's quite funny at different points also. Well worth the $10 if you can get it.

I wondered if this might be the year Oscar smiles at Leo, who I think is a wonderful actor, but after Dallas Buyer's Club my money goes to McConaughey and Leto for actor/supporting. Great performances, tough movie to watch. If you're not in the head space to deal with the topic that day, pick another movie.

I am usually behind waiting for movies to come on my premium cable channels.

So far I enjoyed

Oblivion
John Dies At The End
Beautiful Creatures
Jack the Giant Slayer
Stoker
Oz the Great and Powerful
Star Trek Into the Darkness (saw at the movies)

I am considering going to see Hunger Games Catching Fire since I just watched the first one on Netflix.

I have to say I really enjoyed Jennifer Lawrence so much in "Silver Linings Playbook" which just hit premium cable, so I had to watch "Hunger Games". I have a theater near me which still has "Catching Fire".

In no particular order...

Despicable Me 2
Saving Mr. Banks
Bad Grandpa
The Great and Powerful Oz

We also saw Monsters Inc but was not impressed. The first one was so much better!

My absolute favorite was The Way Way Back. Incredible movie. Also really loved Philomena. About Time and Enough Said were also excellent.

For horror, You're Next was an amazing movie, that hardly anyone saw!!! I've watched it 3 times now, and could watch it again, so much fun.

Of course I also loved the fun movies, Catching Fire, Thor, Star Trek, WWZ and Fast and Furious 6 as well.

This is my fourth year of seeing all the oscar nominated films plus a couple extras for actor nods in films that weren't nominated.

So far I've seen:

American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
The Wolf of Wall Street
Blue Jasmine
August Osage County
The Butler

Still need to see:
Gravity
Her
Nebraska
Philomena
12 Years A Slave

I loved Dallas Buyers Club, Captain Phillips and The Butler. Definitely don't understand the hype for American Hustle, though the cast and costumes were great.
