PS _ I'm happy to answer any questionstions around flying, or flying into Orlando. Particularly from PVD, MHT, BWI, ISP, HOU, BNA, CMH, PHX, etc.

From those airport codes you sound like a you fly with a texan company.

"hint hint"

I guess my cover is blown. No prob - I just can't post the name (not being a spokesperson for the company). So next time to FL drive over to Hobby and give us a ride ;-)

Continental is a GREAT carrier. Very well run. I have some friends there, and they are very happy. Modern fleet, well run, great safety record. Happy customers.

I had one ride on the A340. It was very comfy (Lufthansa to Germany). The A340 hasn't been a great success for Airbus (unlike the A319/320). The 777 has kind of kicked it's butt because of lower operating costs and greater range and payload. The 777 makes more $$ for the companies b/c it carries much more commercial freight underneath (a good revenue stream). The A340 burns more gas with 4 fans, and some pilots I have spoken with say it's a bit underpowerd (surprising given all those engines).

Very true about clear air turbulence (CAT). While flying into a cloud (especially the low level ones during arrival and departure) is usually a safe bet for some chop, you can certainly get good bumps from thermal pockets. Turbulence in high-level cirrus clouds can produce severe turbulence. The mid-level nimbostratus clouds are usually not bad.

I flew y'all back in may but because if I am lucky I can only afford to pay once a year for tickets with cash, I usually end up using frequent flyer points to fly. Unfortunately I am a big person so I have to pay for two seats to fly. This makes for a expensive trip without using miles. With miles I can usually fly first class for the amount of two economy tickets. I flew Southwest back in may because I didn't pay for the tickets.

Airbus got lucky with the 319/320 because they were able to work with them before the 787 comes out. I used to think the 787 was going to be the next success for Boeing but with the setbacks on its launch it will be a bit touchy. That plus the way the economy is right now who knows.

Ok just to set you straight regarding MD11 and DC10. They are the same thing. When MacDonald Corp and Douglas Corp merged in the 80's they went from naming them DC's to MDs hence DC10=MD11 (There was a modification of the aircraft making the reason for the 11 instead of 10). Also the DC-8 = MD80s and DC-9 = MD90s.

i don't know actually - i've never seen the plane he flies....as i recall, he said it's an MD11 but i'm not sure.....he said it holds a lot of cargo, whatever it is...
he flies cargo in Africa.....which he says he loves....he loves not having to deal with human cargo - too demanding...:)

regarding the airbus, i've flown the 320 domestically and the 330 internationally......I've flown the A330 on Northworst's detroit-amsterdam route....(i only fly that route when i fly with my mom)....

i HATE that plane....and i hate the 320s that i've flown in around the US...
inside the US I tend to fly northworst, since i'm usually starting from detroit (when i visit my family), but domestically, i'll fly whatever will get me where i'm going (usually NWA, Delta, AA, or Continental).

Internationally, I try to fly only El Al (i live in Israel).

And i try to fly only the 747, if i have a choice. (since on the TA-NYC route they fly both the 747 and the 777).

When i fly NWA to amsterdam from detroit (with my mom), I have no choice but to fly a KLM 737 into tel aviv.
I don't know what version it is.
It's a nutty plane to be flying internationally though. But as i said, i rarely do it. Only when i'm flying with my mom.

OK - First post here. I'm an Orlando based 737 pilot for a very large low-fare carrier. I have the privledge of flying hundreds of folks destined to Wally World every week. As a resident of Celebration, I too enjoy the mouse with my family.

Airplanes of similar size will not produce a different ride (smooth or bumpy). If you had a smooth ride on a 737 or A320, you got a day with little wind or no significant weather. Much bigger "Heavy" aircraft do offer smoother rides just because there is so much more mass, and harder for the wind to push around. Not many of those flying into Wally World though, unless you are crossing the pond.

I'm happy to hear so many are please with the ride and comfort of the 737's. The Airbus A320 (mainly JetBlue into MCO) is a wider aircraft (with wider seats). Many think that makes it a more comfortable ride.

See you on board......

congratulations on your first post!

would you consider the A330 and the 767 or 777 similar sized planes?

because of the 3, i prefer the 767.....i hate the 777 and despise the A330....
are they similarly sized?
of course the 747 is the best, but of the 3 above, there is something about the 767's ride that is preferable to me. the 777 much much less and the A330 is beyond bad in my opinion.

by the way, besides the nice ride on the 747 (and i always sit upstairs on elal, where it's nice and quiet and secluded), i LOVE the fact that it has 4 engines...
when i'm flying across the atlantic, i like the idea that there's backup...
it bothers me that on the A330 (or on the 777, 767, 757 for that matter) there are only 2 engines........i know you can fly on one......but if you're only starting from 2, the odds are worse than if you start from 4..

as you can see, i'm a worst case scenario sort of a person...

and while i love planes, my fears are starting to get the best of me..

i've seriously looked into how i can get to the states without getting on a plane..

not an easy thing to do from where i am....

Boeing 737's are a common sight at CMH (Columbus Ohio), as well as A320's. since Skybus whent out of Business. Southwest has been a common sight as well as Northwest which flys A320's 757's some DC-9/MD-80's, American MD-80's Usairwys flying Embrirer EJ-170's 737-300's -400's. we now have a Mixture of smaller regional Jets, as well as midrange Jetliners.

Its funny but I prefer 777s over the 747s. The 777 is a more fuel effecient version of the 747 and it is bigger then the 767. By the way your first pic is a L-1011 Tri-Jet. One of the oldest aircraft out there. I do not think Lockhead makes them anymore.

It is funny how the many different types of aircraft you can find at an airport as big as ours. Here in Houston, during the hay days of travel (pre-911) I used to spend my day off sometimes at the airport just watching the airplanes. back then it was fun just watching how the different aircraft handle and so forth.

i used to fly Air Canada a lot....TA to Toronto, then that wind-up propeller plane to windsor..

i think the plane in your picture is the plane i flew in all the time...

it's actually not so bad....except one year in a major snowstorm...
they couldn't get any of them off the ground until one plane that i was on....talk about a rough flight to toronto..

but much worse than that prop plane, is the little jet i've had to take from detroit to JFK....an embraer on delta connection.....
hideous little plane....i don't know if it's G forces you feel as it descends to land, but you feel like your head is exploding....

i was on it once with a group of new flyers - all in their 60s and 70s...they'd never flown before in their lives...they were headed for JFK to transfer to egyptair i think it was for a flight to egypt....
anyway, that embraer scared the living daylights out of them......
when there are people even more scared than i am, i can be cool as a cucumber - but only outwardly....

you know the saying...if god had meant us to fly, he would have given us wings...

if only there were a ship to take me from here to the states....or a train, from here to southhamptom -then i could get on the queen...but no train...no ship.....woe is me...

Correction on that first Pic That is a Boeing 727-200 of TWA.

I flew on this Plane to Toronto from CMH in 1995 This is a Dehavlland Dash 8 of Air Ontario. This was my first flight on a Turboprop. It was a great flight untill we landed in a crosswind and nearly landed in a field

do 727s still fly?

i used to hate that plane....when i flew back and forth to university, it was either the 737 or the 727....i was thrilled when it was the 737, and not so thrilled by the 727....it was such a noisy plane...somehow i always got stuck at the back with the engines...

:lmao:

yes, that's the plane i used to fly in a lot....strangely, i enjoyed it and wasn't scared....don't know why....probably totally irrational - it's probably more dangerous....but i was happy on it....

i'd do the Air Canada route - TA to Toronto - then that Dash 8 to Windsor and then drive across the border into detroit....

i liked air canada a lot, they have really really nice cabin crews......and changing planes in toronto was pretty convenient...

but the summer of 9/11 i got really nervous about airline security....this was before 9/11 but i got really nervous about it for some reason.....
so for our big annual summer home visit, i switched us from air canada to el al (via NYC)....
and we've stuck with that route ever since (except when i fly with my mom, when i'm forced onto northworst via amsterdam)...

as you see, i love planes....i'm just scared to death of them....

as i said, i probably should stop watching air crash investigation on national geographic..:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

727's do not fly much anymore United, Delta retired thier 727's in 2004, Northwest retired their 727's in 2005. Now they are used as freighters for FedEx, DHL, UPS

I believe the reason why there are not many 727s left in service is because they were not very fuel effecient and honestly you can get better range with 2 engines of a 737 then with the tri-jets. I never like the rear mounted engines because usually i liked to sit near the rear of the aircraft so I was closer to the restrooms. Also it meant being the first few on board :rolleyes1

i think the very first plane i ever flew on was a 707....

that was in 1965 when i was 10 years old....
we flew to europe...(before that we went to europe by ship)...
i think it was on pan am....maybe....

but i don't know how we got to new york....i mean which airline....
but from new york it was probably pan am....or maybe twa?

we used to fly them a lot to europe...

and to the far east we almost always flew Northwest Orient......air...lines (i'm singing that....it was their commercial)...

anyway, it was almost always northwest orient to japan...
and pan am or twa to europe....

it's amazing...i was never scared of flying as a kid..and we flew all the time....we flew all over the world, constantly.....zillions of flights each year...
i always flew with my parents wherever they went - school or no school...

but somewhere along the way, long into adulthood, i started to get really really afraid of flying (crashing)...

and it's starting to get in the way....i won't fly for work at all...
i refuse...
though they're constantly trying to get me to fly hither thither and yon, but i won't go (right now they're hassling me to go to sofia - but no way jose...no bulgaria, no shmulgaria...nothing... no how...no way)...

i probably should take valium or something and just go for it...

The Boeing 727 was my first Commercial Jet I have ever flew on in 1979 from Columbus to Chicago O'hare. The flight was smooth. I also flew on a 707 and the 737-200 United and TWA were my first Airlines I ever flew on. The 707 flight was smooth untill we hit turbulence over Indiana

all through university i only flew united to get to school and back....they were the airline between detroit and baltimore...
and then when i went to grad school at the university of chicago, i flew united to chicago from detroit......

planes really are beautiful...
i love watching them...

i was by an air force base the other day when the f-16s were practicing....
i couldn't take my eyes off of them....
takes your breath away....

Same here I love to watch them fly over my Church which is in the Direct Flight path of the northern Runway of CMH sometimes when the Jets fly in to CMH from west to east they fly over somewhat low over the church . But My Grandmother lives closser to the Airport the Jets are quite Low and Loud

I was the same way regarding flying. The oldest aircraft I have flown was a DC-8 in Africa. I have flown in, DC-8s,-9s,-10s,MD-11, 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, 787, A320, A340, BRJs, CRJs, and a German Fokker.

Funny thing about me is it isn't the flying and the turbulence that gets me it is being stuck in a tube that does. After being in the hospital for 2 months I have not been able to be confined spaces with out being able to look out a window or walk around. The 777s and 747s are great because I can at least walk around and stretch and not worry about running into people.

My mother is a veteran flier like me and never really had trouble until a faithful flight between Boston and Richmond VA. We flew on a BRJ and the turbulence was so bad that the cabin attendant was not able to get out of her seat. That was also the first time my mother got ill. She refuses to fly any of the regional jets if she doesn't have to. We pushed it with the flight to the Bahamas but otherwise no more regional jets for her.

When my brother went to college it was purely Southwest. Back then it was a cheap way to fly. Of course that was the time of the 0.91 gas prices too. It was also pre-911 and all that problems. Well it is going to be a 757 to Orlando and back for my trip this December.

everybody always does the statistics bit for me...
how flying is safer than driving a car, etc etc etc.

that's all well and good, but if you're in an accident in a car, you don't fall down six miles....
and if you're in a boat, at least you have a chance to swim......

but an airplane isn't all that forgiving....especially when you're flying over the ocean...

and then when the statistics don't work they try fate on me -
"well, if your numbers up, your number's up"...
sure....that's true.....if my number's not up, it'll be ok....
except, of course, if the pilot's number is up.....
