We also vacation in October and our guide suggested an October use year. Her point was that if we needed to cancel, we would have the most time left in our year to use or bank the points.

The thought process is to have your UY roughly the same time or just prior to when you normally want to vacation. If you do need to change a reservation you have more time to find another vacation time. Another possibility is if one year you can't manage a vacation when you normally take one, you will still have some time see if you can swing a vacation later in the year or bank your points for another year.
I would suggest October or September or even possibly August. Also check out the point chart and make sure that October will be the normal time you still want to vacation taking into account the cost in points for your vacation.
We used to go to Disney in April - June as a matter of course but we changed our travel plans based on point cost. By utilizing low point cost seasons we can now double our normal vacations.
September may be one of the months there aren't use years associated with - there are a few.
October would be good. We travel in October and our use year is April. Since you need to cancel DVC 30 days out, we'd be cancelling mid-September and still be able to bank any points into the next use year (because we have six months) or six months to travel.
Its probably not a good idea to have a November-March use year, since when you cancel you'd be past your banking window - plus have less than six months to use your points.
