What type of things can you request in a faxed room request?

This is pretty new to me. We're staying at Contemporary in June, so quite a ways off, but what things are possible to request?

We'll be in the North Wing and would like a 1st floor room near the main building. Are those things appropriate to ask for? I wouldn't expect to ask for something that is available for extra cost, like a Tower room with castle view.

When I fax in room preference I usually ask for a specific building or area of a resort. I never ask for an upgrade on a fax request but it does not hurt to ask when you check in. You never know.
