What type of Carry-On bag do you use?

Are there some that might be better than others?? Would a duffel bag work or a school backpack?

My favorite is a backpack with wheels. Although it goes on the main suitcase for traveling through the airport to checkin, I can easily roll it behind me once I give up my checked bag. It is roomier than an American Tourister soft-sided carryon that I have that doesn't have wheels, yet it still meets with carry-on size requirements. We got it at TJ Maxx for under $20. It has been on MANY trips with us in the 2-3 years we've owned it, and it is still like new. The material that it is made out of is like a Jansport backpack. It is a completely generic name on the bag, that I can't recall now and I'm at work.

I use a club style tote bag. It unzips up the side, across the top and down the other side so taht when it's opened it's still "square".

It also has an expandable compartment on the bottom. I won't wear sandals on a plane, but want to slip them on as soon as I land. My sandals easily fit into the compartment even with it unexpanded, so that works great for me, plus gives me a little extra room for the way back.

It has both straps for hand carrying, plus a should strap.

It's big enough to pack my cosmetics, basic toiletries, changes of clothes, camera, jewelry and a book, but not much else, so it doesn't get overloaded. It will fit above or below, making it very convenient in that respect as well.

Hi Kitty!

DD and I both used backpacks as carry ons. They fit nicely under the seats (so we didn't have to worry about the overhead) and were easy to carry thru the airport even when we were running for the next plane.

I packed in each of them:

Medications
Cameras
Snacks
1 set of clean clothes
personal hygiene essentials such as toothbrushes and hairbrushes
Guidebook
Passes, tickets, and all travel info.
Headphones and CD players
Books
Travel games

This way, even if my checked bag was misplaced, I still had the bare essentials.

I used to use more like a regular carry on bag, but like the backpacks better. They have the added bonus of not worrying that you were whacking any seated passengers when getting on or off the plane.

Bonnie, I like the idea of a backpack. Sounds like you can get a lot of things in one!!!!


The backpack with wheels would be a good idea, too!

A bag with different compartments would be perfect so I'm not digging thru everything all the time!!!

Do not use a duffel bag! I bought a rolling backpack this time around. I had a duffel in October and will never do that again. Especially if you have a lay over and wander the airport.

A big, fat, stuffed Diaper Bag! I hope I never get picked to empty it by security! Everything starts out packed perfectly. You wouldn't believe how many snacks, drinks, books, crayons, stickers, paper, hot wheels, oh yeah, & Diapers I can get in there! Along with my wallett, water, tylenol, plane tickets & gum. But we are flying from CA to FL!!
We leave Thursday!! YIPPEE!!

A rolling backpack! I carry my pin collection onboard so this is a must. I also carry my regular backpack to keep my papers and books in which fits well under the seat in front of me. I would prefer to carry nothing on, but the pins are too valuable to try to insure and replace. Even my grandson has his own rolling backpack that he uses when he travels with us.
