What type/brand of workout clothes to buy?

Tracey & Shan - I'm 5'5" so regular capris look like Revenge of the Nerds floods. :lmao: My legs and tights are not exactly made for each other but I did buy a pair to have more than one pair that isn't just yoga pants.

SamSam - I'll have to let you know where I locate shirts that don't come near my waist.

Suzanne...I think you'll notice a big difference with the "dri" socks. Our Marshalls had Adidas ones 2/5.99 and best of all---they are black with pink. For me, that means my husband and boys won't snag them out of my drawers.:cheer2:
Shan...Thanks for the hint about the Brooks Crops.
Liz..."Ohhhhh....Revenge of the Nerds brings back memories. I know the look you speak of---it's why I can't wear petites.:rotfl:
SamSam...After a few washes, my shirts creep up. We have a friend, a 65 year old grandma, who has ran marathons. She is a tiny little thing, probably about Shan's size. She told me that if I have side stitches when I run, to raise my hands above my head. Everytime I do that, my shirt comes up. It's a constant raise arms, pull down shirt, raise arms, pull down shirt.....
and if I don't tie my shorts really tight--they ride down. What a look!
Now that I think about it, it's amazing that I run at all with all of my fashion faux-pas.
****Just remember that we look more beautiful walking/running with our short, long, fashion mistake clothing and sweating, than we ever did just standing on the sidelines with perfect hair and make-up. (I swiped that from a RW article)

Tracey, side stitches are more likely the result of improper breathing. When you breathe in and/or out on your right foot strike, your diaphragm compresses you liver. Try breathing in and out on your left foot strike even if you have to slow your pace for awhile. The reason raising your arms up works is because it pulls your liver up with your arms. I know totally off topic but I am trying to help the fashion police!!! :rotfl:

I'll just start running with my arms up to make my tops the right length.:lmao:

Speaking of clothing ... can anyone give me a recommendation for socks? :goodvibes My right foot is slightly smaller than my left and I find I get blisters on the side of my heel unless I double up on my socks. Now that I'm running longer, the double socks make my foot feel really warm.

I started getting stitches last week - I was told it was a hydration problem. Actually have no idea when I am breathing... :confused3 but I guess I'll be paying a little more attention on Saturday. I'll also give the raised arms trick a try because I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to coordinate my breathing on the first try.

Here's another frustrated short person... . I cannot find much of anything in petites. It's double annoying for me b/c I have to wear workout clothes every day for my job. I spend $$$ on the expensive workout attire...then spend more $$$ on getting them tailored. If I could find decent petite length pants I'd be on :cloud9: . Brasil Sul makes petite pants...but they are mega-expensive :( but sooo much fun!

As for brands...I love Nike tempo shorts and xt clothes; Brooks Sherpa Shorts; Sugoi Verve Shorts and Fizz Tanks; Under Armour cold weather tights, tops and jackets; and my all time fave jacket is my Adidas fleece running jacket..it ROCKS!!!

I also  my Adidas aloe vera running socks.

I plan to buy another running skirt...as the Brooks one I just bought is working nicely :).

On the side stitch thing - I noticed they went away or I don't even get them when I exhale on my left foot. I didn't know the reason behind it was due to liver compression, I just know it worked :)

I'm a Target girl too. My biggest challenge is finding girl shorts with real pockets. My first year, I got 3 pairs of Champion shorts with two zip pockets, Now, can't find 'em anywhere. One More Mile has some with pockets too, but they just don't fit right.

You can also find name brand stuff on ebay that's NWT (new with tags) for much less than you would pay in a running store. I don't like to buy clothes that are used, but have picked up a couple new items that were great!

Have you seen the Lands End petite workout clothes? I have two of the long sleeve wicking shirts in a petite small and they rock! I don't even have to roll up the sleeves!

I love my Brooks pants, I looked at the skirt and it is a similar style to my pants. Do the shorts underneath bunch up?

Great info everyone! I normally wear my Army trunks and a t-shirt in the normal weather; when it gets hot, I only have one wicking shirt but plan to get more. Being military, I'm kind of used to suffering through running in cotton in 95 degree heat :scared: It gets a little wet....YUCK. Anyway, thanks for the tips on the inexpensive stuff. Does anyone know what happened to the Run Disney gear????

PS...Can anybody tell me why the graphics at the bottom of my signature are cut off??????

I've been really successful with Under Armour. I've got a few of their tech shirts and I actually like wearing them when I'm not out and about. As for shorts I picked up a couple pair of the Nike 2-in-1 shorts with the compression boxer underneath. I'm in heaven...most comfortable pair of shorts I've ever worn in my life and even better that I got them at the Nike Outlet store...cha-ching!

Thanks, Lisa. I'm gonna try to breathe on my left foot strike. I don't get side stitches all the time, but when I do, raising my arms really does help. Although, I try to cross them behind my head so I don't look like someone is trying to rob me.:lmao:
I've decided to look for some sort of vest to run in. There were so many days this winter where a jacket was too heavy and just a shirt was too light. Anyone have recommendations on a vest?

or just pull your pants really low:rotfl2: Then run with your hands up and reach down and hike your pants up and repeat. Hey, it's an upper body work-out. I've sported this look that's why I really wonder what my neighbors think when I run---that's why I just smile and !

Tracey, that is what I would call cross training. There is a woman who runs the loop I do who adds in skips, arm swings, etcetera. Everyone says she looks crazy but she is really ramping up her heart rate!!

I have 2 different vests. The first is a fleece one that I bought at Wal-Mart believe it or not. It is a Danskin and fits the best. I wear a LS tech shirt and the vest when temps are around 30-40 outside and it keeps me really warm and wicks the sweat away. I also have a North Face neopreney kind that works well also but I wear it more for skiing than running. It is a little warmer than the fleece and good for temps under 30 (very rarely do I run in these temps for fear of icing!!). I am looking for a vest that is fleece on the inside and waterproof/windproof material (like my jackets) on the outside. Anyone have one of these???

Hi Lisa...

I have a great vest from EMS....they are a staple in their catalog/online. I don't think it's windproof so I wear a light shell overtop when I need windproofing. I know this isn't what you're looking for...but I really LOVE my EMS vest and they come in a bunch of cool colors :).

AmyBeth: I looked at that one and it is really similar to my North Face one. I have a couple NB wind vests that I have been known to throw over the top, I was just trying to cut my bulk. As I have said before, kind of a diva running, princess is not just a moniker...I don't like baggy, swishy, clinky, etcetera.

Yes, my name is Lisa and I am high maintenance. Admitting the problem is the first step right?????

Amy, which Brooks running skirt did you buy? I see they have the Motion one like my pants, but also another style, too. I'm wondering if the shorts underneath bunch up? Thanks!

Another short person (5'2") stopping by. I have SUCH a hard time finding pants, since cropped pants just look a couple inches too short and regular pants are way too long (and the crotch is hangy). Petites work and the length is usually perfect. I have found the petite (or short?) length C9 at Target effective (although watch the seams--I had to bring a pair back after one washing because of a stitching mistake that left a big gap in the seat!). I just ordered the Lands End petite performance pants on the suggestion of Lenshanem here.

I have a question about shorts.

Boys, get out of this thread!

I'm not overweight--but I'm developing some fleshier bits than I used to have on my thighs.....

Can someone tell me about whether I want to wear compression shorts or loose shorts? Relative benefits of each as far as practicality? I don't want to make people think "Does she think she can *wear* those shorts?" but I also want to be comfortable...

Will all this walking make my thighs any smaller? My thighs thought they were only children for the longest time...and then they met. :(

I cannot wear anything other than a compression-type short. Every time I try the looser fitting ones I get chub rub. I've found a nice alternative to get the skirt with the compression short under. Those are nice. Only thing with them is that I am taller and would like my shorts to be at least an inch longer.

I highly recommend trying either the compression short or skirt/compression short version and I will bet you will be quite happy.

Oh, I so love this quote!

Thanks, Lily. I'll try the compression shorts.

Is it hard to pull them back up when you are sweating and need to use the facilities? I have a regular skort that I wore for WDW touring last summer, and I had a heck of a time pulling it back up once I'd been outside for awhile.

If you're uncomfortable with compression shorts alone I'm pretty sure both Under Armour and Nike make loose shorts with a fitted compression short underneath (they make styles for Men and Women)...as for the skirt...you'll have to take her word for it...never tried one and don't plan on ever doing it...if they ever make a running/walking kilt I may be in trouble...
