What triggers magic bands being sent?

I was just wondering what triggers magic bands being sent? Is it as soon as you reserve a hotel room, or once you add park tickets to a hotel reservation? I'm thinking of reserving a few rooms, but not 100% sure how many people are coming with me, so not quite ready to customize magic bands... Thanks!

They won't ship until about 28-30ish days before arrival.

I added my niece on to a ressie in April after DD and I had already done our magic bands. Disney's My Experience then asked me to again confirm shipping address again and pick out the color for our bands...again...now with my niece, too. So, yeah...we have a lot of magic bands at home. lol I think if you add someone last minute, you will at least get the gray bands at the hotel.

The " trigger " is customizing them. If you never do you will get the ones at the resort that are the generic gray colored ones. First step is getting your resort reservation.
