What to wear question

What does one wear to the Wake/Viewing of their father? My father has been battling lung cancer and is failing fast. I live 2.5/3 hours away from were the service would be so I need to plan accordingly. I have clothes for a funeral but have no clue about a wake/viewing.

The same type of clothing you would wear for the funeral. Like black pants and a neutral top... Or a dark dress

OP Sorry about your Dad I know it's hard to ose a parent.
I usually go with black pants and nice top, jacket in Winter
and a dress for the funeral.

I'm sorry about your dad. #1 is comfortable shoes, it will be a long day on your feet. I would just wear a dark colored pants outfit and comfortable shoes.

I agree with the comfortable shoes. But you can also wear something he gave you or something that he likes, to remind you that he is always with you wherever you go. I wore one of my dad's scarves that he had handed down to me years before to the funeral and the wake.

this is what I wear for both wakes and funerals

I wore what my Mom thought I looked nice in. But previous posters are correct customarily speaking. black slacks/neutral blouse, and comfortable appropriate shoes.

However, my grandmother had requested none of us wear black to her wake/funeral. She wanted us in "lively" colors. So, honestly I would take your fathers personality into consideration. I am sorry for your pain. May his journey be a peaceful one, and may you be comforted by warm happy memories.

Sorry about your Dad. My mother in law passed away last week and I wore black pants, with a dark purple tank top type of shirt and a black blazer over it. My sisters in law pretty much wore the same except instead of blazers they wore black sweaters.

Thanks for all the kind words. I am grateful that my father is still with us. We are trying to spend as much time with him as possible. I hope that he can make it two more weeks to find out what his first grandchild is.

I am a planner so I'm trying to "prep" as much as I can ahead of time. The last wake/viewing I attended was my grandmothers 14 years ago. I don't remember much about it. Plus, I have to figure out what outfits my pregnant body will fit into.

I wore a black cotton dress to my dad's viewing. We had to drive 2+ hours to get there and it wouldn't wrinkle. I wore a dressier outfit for the funeral.

You can't go wrong with black, navy or gray pants and a subdued top of some sort. And comfortable shoes.
