What to wear in August to keep cool?

I know it will be hot and humid in August in the parks. I'm just curious what women wear to keep dry and somewhat cool? I was thinking of bringing some of my tennis/golf dresses with me. They are mostly the Dry Fit material which works great. I'm just wondering will I look like a total goof and will people think I missed my tennis match :-)

I love the dry fit stuff for August. While I don't have "tennis dresses" I do have some skorts I wear.

I bought a tennis outfit from Izod last year for my August trip and it was not out of place at all. I wore dri fit t-shirts during the day and disney t-shirts at night.:thumbsup2

One thing I realized about Florida, no one cares what you wear as long as it is appropriate. I wear yoga capris one day and a lace summer dress another day

Hot and Humid is not the term ...

It will be an Outdoor Sauna, it will feel like you are 15 steps away from the firey pit below, you will wish you had a portable shower strapped to your head ...

That being said, I would wear as little as possible that would keep you from being kicked out of the park. As dontthrowsand said .. it's Florida, it's hot, no one cares what your wearing as long as you are wearing a little something!!

One thing that I absolutely recommend is Under Armour Compression Heatgear, made by Under Armour sportswear, it is tight fitting (to avoid chaffing) and has moisture wicking technology!

One thing to remember during those months here in FL ... Drink plenty of fluids! Water and Sports Drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade!

Before you go to bed at night put water bottles in the freezer. They are great to rub over your body to cool down. Or take ziplock bags with you and ask for a cup of ice at the CS locations. Pour ice into ziplock and hold bag on back of the neck.

We always visit in July or August, and I wear the lightest material shorts that I can find. Last summer I bought a bunch of cheap tank tops from Walmart. I like sleeveless tops when it's that hot, but feel a little too old to wear them at home. A cute tee and a light skirt are perfect for going out for a TS meal. I always figure on two tops per day because it's nice to change out of your sweaty stuff after a swim or shower. TMI, but extra bras and undies too!

I always wear the travel type shirts and shorts that can be washed out at night and worn the next day. It saves on packing and they are relatively cool. Be sure to bring a poncho for the monsoon rains and also Splash Mountain in case you get the "wet" seat!

I think you're on the right track wearing clothes with moisture-wicking fabric. I have some shorts that I bought at REI that are great. They're called Columbia Sandy River Cargo Water Shorts. They're moisture-wicking, very light and comfortable, and you can hand-wash them at night and they're dry by morning! Love them.

And I try to find other clothes that are moisture wicking as well. Target sells Dri-Weave type clothes in their athletic apparel section, I think they're Champion brand. They have lightweight shirts that are great. And you can even buy Coolmax socks!

I too am going with the golf/tennie skorts with the "Dri-weave" fabric for our Sept trip. I have several of the Nike ones that I love. They are so comfortable and with the dri-weave shorts built in I don't have to worry about flashing the World. :lmao::lmao:

I agree! I have seen some crazy outfits, and nobody cared either way. I bought some cute, cotton skorts at Costco actually! I'm going to try to bring a sundress or two and see how they work out, but I'll be wearing mostly shorts, tanks, and skorts.

I was also looking for some type of cooling cloth that would be convenient to bring, still looking, we'll see! I am thoroughly preparing myself for the August heat! ;)

Since I am a teacher, we often travel during the summer. I agree with all previous posters on light, moisture-wicking fabrics when possible (it is worth paying a little more).

However, the best tips for staying cool, I think, are:

1. Do the parks first thing in the morning, and then head back to the resort for a cooling nap or pool time;
2. Take advantage of walking through the stores as you are traveling throughout the parks - they are air-conditioned, and can give instant relief;
3. Do a sit-down lunch, to revive yourself in an air-conditioned restaurant;
4. Plan at least one water park day (even when it is crazy hot, it doesn't feel as hot) - but be sure to reapply sunscreen often;
5. Bring one of those water misting fans - they really do offer relief;
6. I've never tried them, but many people SWEAR by the pellet-filled cooling wraps that you wear around your neck. I've seen directions here on the disboards.

Just ordered a couple of fans/misters and cooling bandana for August!

Good Luck! DBF and I will be braving the heat along with you! :thumbsup2

I hate moisture wicking materials - they just don't breathe the way cotton does. That said, I'm told that UnderArmour is coming out with a cotton dri-weave soon, so I'm on the look out for it.

Loose fitting is key. If it's tight it's hot. It isn't just about taking off your layers in the tropics, it's about wearing breathable clothes.

DH often wears his columbia fishing shirts (loose and vented for coolness) and a pair of baggy shorts in the summer. I usually go with a thin cotton t-shirt, cut a little loose (I get the slim fit tissue tees in an XL.) with a baggy pair of thin, thin cargo shorts and nude cotton or viscouse panties. For my bra I wear either a good sports bra or suffer with my regular bra. Occasionally I'll wear a skirt with a pair of little cotton biker shorts under.

Wow! Don't sugar coat it! :rotfl2:
Now I'm getting nervous! Although the year we went in October, it was that "if you get that close to me again I'm going to punch you" kind of hot and sticky.
