DS's school closes on Friday after 48 years of service to american military living overseas. They are making a time capsule that will be stored in the school archives in the US and will open it in 48 years. I have been thinking about what we should contribute and I am not coming up with anything exciting so I am hoping by posting this here that you all will help with suggestions, because I know the folks on the CB always have some great ideas.

TIA.

Maybe laminate some pictures ofthe kids that went there in the last year they were open? If you are looking for something that is more pop culture related, some CD's of popular music?

The newspaper(s) published on the day of the school closing and/or a school shirt. If they're a uniform school what about that?

How about essays from the students of what life was like for them in school? Or their predictions for the future?

A Hostess Twinkie is the only food that won't be any worse in 48 years.

Oooo, I like this a lot. My DS is "graduating" from 5th grade this year, and they had to do individual "time capsules" that they took home to open when they're 25. They had to include an essay about what they thought they would be doing when they're 25. DS said he thinks he'll probably be engaged. :teeth:

He also had to include a videotape of all of us, so that he could see how we looked and sounded 14 years before.

Something with "prices" on it.. An ad from Walmart; a restaurant menu; an ad from a local supermarket; etc..

It's always amazing to look back and see what items cost "way back when"....;)

Some WDW park maps?? I'd send you some that I picked up last week, but I don't think they'd get to you in time :(.

While totally agreeing with the pictures, newspaper and ads with prices, how about a TV/cable guide as well? ;)

Having a young DD, I also thought of a small toy...Polly Pocket, Legos, etc. Who knows, it might be worth something 48 years from now! :p

An Elton John CD :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

and

a jersy from the local football (soccer) club :teeth: :teeth: :teeth:

Does your school have yearbooks? Ours did, perhaps you could include one of those if you have them.

All of our elementary schools (8 total) closed here a few years ago, and they made 4 new schools. It was fun looking at the pictures of the one my children went to when they had pics of all the students that attended the 1st year the school opened and a pic of all the students who were there the last year. I don't know if your school would have anything like that in its archive, but that's something I'd definitely think of including.

Maybe you could create a map of your area, showing what all stores are there today? This changes rapidly in most areas through out time.

I would also concentrate on things that are popular today. The clothing, music, movies, popular tv programs, famous stars of today, just stuff like that.

Prices of things that someone else suggested is an excellent idea.

Oh, and I just thought of another. Magazine cut outs of our automobiles. I know guys love this type of thing!

I know some people that put the current issue of TV Guide in them. People Magazine or NewsWeek are good, too.

I made a time capsule for my dd's during the year 2000. I took pics of our house, cars, pets, and things around town - our church, bank, grocery store, gas station, my workplace, DH's workplace, etc. I also included a register receipt from the grocery store - prices of milk, bread, etc, and from the gas station. Wow - those 2000 gas prices are already looking pretty antiquated! ;)

As for the school's capsule, what about local and international newspapers, especially about what's going on with the military. Also, perhaps in addition to predictions, the children could write about what they think about current events and what it's like for their mom or dad to be serving their country at this time. Have them include what a "normal" day is like for them - do they ride a bus to school or go in a car, what do they do after school - sports, homework, watch tv, play in a park, do they play an instrument or participate in other organized activities, etc. What are their favorite foods (maybe a pic or magazine pic of the foods would be fun too) In fact, magazine ads in general could be interesting, they show current fashions, hairstyles, even things as mundane as kitchen appliance or dog food ads could be interesting in 2052!

Have fun!

Laurie :)

Don't forget a paper with current gas prices written on it. It would be interesting to see what those will be like in 48 years....if we're still using gas that is! ;)

My best friend and I made one when we were younger, we included predictions for the future. We dug it up after 5 years this year and some of the predictions actually came true! (ex-"Beverly Hills 90210 will FINALLY be off the air...")
