What to pack for seasickness?

I would like to be prepared!! I have 2 adults and three kiddos (7,4,3) so I am not sure what I can give them? Any thoughts?

My husband and I take 1 Dramamine (less drowsy formula) each day. We give the children 1 children's chewable dramamine every 6 hours. We start taking ours at lunch on the day we board the ship. We also take one the day we get off the ship because we are driving home and still have our "sea legs."
You may want to try any medication before the trip to be sure you or the children don't have side effects. Your childrens' doctor can also advise you on what might work best with your children. Have fun!!

We use the sea bands - which are not a medicine but seem to work. We also take the patch with us (perscribed by dr.) just in case we hit 20-30 ft seas as we had on one cruise.

They also have free sea sickness pills on board - but not sure what ages those are for.

Does anyone know if you need more patches on board do they have them? I know I would have to pay for a dr. visit and the price - but is that available or should I just take extra from home?

I take Meclizine (non-drowsy) and start taking it 2 days before the cruise and continue to take it 2 days after I am home. Not sure about the kids...ask your pharmacist or your doctor to be safe.

Our pediatrician said he doesn't like giving kids anything but if necessary Meclizine at half a tablet would be ok. They have never had aproblem. It's me who gets green before we leave port. I know use a wrist thingy that (using a battery) sends little pulses from your wrist up to your brain.

Call your pediatrician and see what they say.

I do the same as the above poster. I take Bonine (meclizine) starting 2 days before the cruise and continue taking 1 pill twice a day throughout. They also make children's Bonine for kids ages 6 and older. DCL does have free meclizine available also.

I also brought some ginger tablets with me. One day the seas were a bit rough and even on the Bonine I started feeling quesy. I took some ginger and felt much better.

Walmart has Meclizine chewables for around $6 for 100 tablets. You just need to ask at the pharmacy as they keep them back there. Much cheaper than Bonine or Dramamine.

I heard stories of some people getting sicker from taking something than just getting adjusted to the flow.

Just remember that any of the over the counter stuff that was mentioned above is for 6 and older. I called our pediatrician and they said that my 2yo daughter was not to take even 1/2 of a pill!!! He said to use Benadryl. I didn't think that that sounded right, but have researched it and have found out that he was spot on (why did I question him??).

Just make sure that you ask your pediatrician before giving your 3 year old any off the over the counter meds.

Anything ginger! Ginger is a natural remedy for nausea. We LOVE Ginger Chews made by The Ginger People just to snack on, much less to help unsettled tummies regardless of its cause. They are indeed VERY chewy, so little ones wouldn't be able to eat them. Ginger tablets would obviously work as well.

No, Sea-Bands don't have batteries. They are stretchy terry material with a hard plastic knob that puts pressure on a point in your wrist.

There are wrist bands that have electrical (battery) stimulation, but those aren't Sea-Bands. They are called Relief Bands, and cost about $120 more than the Sea-Bands do!

I've never used the Relief Bands, so I can't comment on them, but I've used Sea-Bands, and they work wonderfully!

Check with your doctor before using ginger pills. It can be fatal for people with certain health issues, or on certain medications.

The only sure thing for me are the prescription patches, (transderm-scop). My Dr. has never had an issue prescribing them and they work so well! I have tried dramamine & meclezine (?spelling), they both make me sleepy and I definitely don't want that!

Our kids didnt do well on our first cruise. It didnt help that we had HUGE seas that made many people sick....

After that we used Meclizine (Bonine) and started a day before and never had a problem since. Dramamine will make you sleepy but Bonine has less of that effect.

Most motion sickness medications use an antihistimine which is what makes you drowsy.

The kids get one of these chewables in the AM and again before dinner. 7 cruises later... never had a problem.
