Hi Everyone

Hope you can help with all your vast experience, when we go to WDW in 12months 3 weeks (to be exact) we are stopping in a Villa for the first time (usually stop in a hotel) now i know that each villa complex is different, but what generic contents can we expect e.g will there be a coffee maker, waffle iron etc
Also what is your fav thing about stopping in a villa, i have mixed feelings at the mo, as DH and myself are used to the luxuries of a hotel, but this time we are travelling with family and it makes sense to stay in a Villa
Thanks
Ali

Hi Ali.

Most villas come stocked with a full kitchen, including toaster, kettle, dishwasher, microwave etc
Many also have a 'waste disposal' unit , almost like having 2 sinks.
Iron, ironing-board, hair-dryer's are generally supplied too.

The fridges are massive - we have an American style one here at home also.

Many should also have a coffee maker but guess that depends on the owner.

Common to have ceiling fans in all the rooms, TVs often usually supplied in all bedrooms.
Some also have a games room or internet access- there are so many villas out there the owners are doing their best to make their properties more attractive.
Guess ultimately if there is anything specific you will need it's best to ask the owner.
Things like beach towels also vary, although we tend to buy our own.

You may need to buy the likes of refuse bags, swing bin liners, washing up liquid etc - it can just depend, we have stayed in villas that don't even have salt present.
Some owners always ensure that some basics are present, and I guess also guests can leave some supplied behind too.

These days we prefer a split stay, going for 3 weeks we prefer not to spend the whole holiday in a villa.
For me the main advantages are a private secluded pool, all that extra room, cooking facilities and just that feeling of being able to relax a bit more, something that can sometimes be difficult in a hotel.

If you get a south facing pool you get the sun all day, so you will see owner's advertise their homes accordingly, personally also feel a fenced pool is ideal also for extra privacy.

Sorry, I am not from the UK but stay in Villa's all the time. I prefer them because of the added space and the kitchen.
It is best you contact the owner before flying out to see what they provide. Most always they have your basics. Coffee maker, kettle, pans for cooking. Toasters, microwaves, washer/dryer. Plates and glassware. Some have extras like waffle makers. Some I have found don't stock enough towels, so I take a few extra with me, expecially pool sized towels so I don't have to do laundry that often.

Some places will not have back up rolls of toilet paper (just what is on the roll) and only a small bar of soap. I usually like to head to the villa first and then head off to the grocery store to get what I will be needing so I know ahead of time to not buy something already there in abundance or not to buy things to make waffles if there is no waffle maker.

I'm on the other side of the fence in that all the times I've been over there I've always stayed in a villa, each time has been a different one with different owners as well, but they all tend to be pretty much the same with regards to the basics that they offer. You will find that most if not all will offer a fully stocked kitchen (i.e glasses, plates, cutlery, pans, oven, microwave etc) and all the ones I've stayed in had coffee makers, you will have full laundry facilities, nowadays you will tend to have cable and dvd players in all the bedrooms and private pool. The extras tend to change per villa but like johnnysharp2 said most of the owners are trying to keep up with each other and the majority are now offering games rooms (usually in the garage), internet access (although most will not provide a PC so you will have to take a laptop) and some are even offering free local and international calls amongst other things.
I like using them for the home away from home feeling (although in this case the home is a lot bigger, has a pool and is in Florida :) ) and if you are travelling as a family or a group of friends it's nice just to have more space around you.

You can expect every facility imaginable. Having said that, I'm not sure I've ever had a waffle iron, so edit that to read, "every facility imaginable, minus one!" :rotfl: There will be a full kitchen with coffee-maker, kettle, toaster, blender, dishwasher, American fridge with ice-maker, cooker, microwave, waste disposal, all cooking utensils, crockery, cutlery, glasses, hoover, hairdryers, washer, dryer, tea-towels, towels, pool towels. All will have air-con, most will have cable TV and DVD players, some will have additional features such as whirlpool baths, games rooms, gym equipment, PCs with free internet access, free long distance phone calls, spa...

What you won't often find are "disposables" such as kitchen towel (although there will be toilet paper), bin liners, washing-up liquid, dishwasher detergent, washing powder, tumble-dryer sheets, hand soap, shower gel, etc. Some do have a small "starter" supply. Sometimes there is kitchen towel and/or coffee filter papers left behind by previous occupants.

The more I talk to friends and fellow DISers about the whole onsite/offsite and/or hotel/villa thing, the more clear it becomes that most of us have a very specific notion of what the Orlando experience is for us. Sometimes the differences are fairly subtle, other times they can be quite significant, but either way, they are extremely important. More often than not, what Orlando is for any one of us is that to which we've become accustomed. Until last year, we'd only ever stayed onsite for a few days at a time and invariably in the middle of villa stay (just packing an overnight bag). Last October, we had a week in a villa followed by a week onsite at the BoardWalk. We're just back from 8 nights onsite at SSR followed by 5 nights at the Reunion Grande. Both trips were fabulous, but unquestionably served to affirm our belief that villa stays are what we prefer. I love, love, love WDW, and whilst I don't hate being surrounded by it 24/7, without a doubt, I prefer getting out and about. It's what Orlando is for me. It doesn't follow that I think staying in a villa is better than staying onsite, or in a hotel offsite. It's just better for us. I totally understand why many people love to be onsite and why my way of doing it just wouldn't be "Orlando" for them.

What I love about hotels is the ability to shower and change in the evening, walk down for drinks at the bar and then on to dinner. Of course, we still go out for meals when we're in a villa, but it needs more planning and is nowhere near as leisurely an experience. And I hate getting all "creased-up" in the car. Afterwards, too, it's so much more civilised to just be able to stroll back to your room, rather than having to wait for a cab. Having said, that, you wouldn't spend 2 or 3 weeks in Orlando and just eat at your own hotel, so it's a moot point.

I find a villa far more relaxing at the very end of the day. When we get home in the evening, be it from a park or dinner, we love chilling out playing pool, taking a dip and relaxing in the jacuzzi. We've had some of our best laughs around pool tables! I enjoy the space and privacy - for us a hotel room feels very confining after a few days. I never use hotel pools or jacuzzis, but I'm in them morning and evening when I have my own. Having washing and drying facilities means we can take less in our suitcase (although dh would undoubtedly dispute that I actually do) and go home with a suitcase full of clean clothes. Using hotel laundry facilities is such a drag. I love staying in fabulous homes (most of which I could never aspire to) and living the dream for a few weeks each year. Making my own bed and cleaning the kitchen are not chores for me when I'm in them.

ETA: Oops! Methinks I talk too much. There weren't any other repsonses when I started typing

Blimey I was just about to edit my post as I thought that was long Deb.
I think for both of our posts the term 'waffle' is appropriate, maybe 'informative waffle' sounds better. ;)

I know what you mean about the creased effect in the car - I have been known to take a shirt with me and put it on in the car when we arrive at wherever we have driven to - sad lad that I am.

We prefer a split stay because for part of the holiday you have restaurants, a bar, zero depth pool, children's fountains and playground etc - at least some 'entertainment' of somesorts whether it be on-site at Disney or similar accomodation elsewhere.
To stay for the whole holiday in a villa would be too long for us now, and having to drive everywhere can be a handicap, especially when your son often doesn't want to go out after 5pm!

Our problem is we need cooking facilities everywhere we stay really, so it's DVC and the likes of the Omni villas (determined to mention here somewhere on this thread) and then rest of the stay in a villa.

Is that something a waffle iron could help with? :rotfl:

Don't have much to add after Deb :)
One bit of advice regarding a villa rental is not only work out where everybody is sleeping but also where everyone is sitting.

It has never caused us a problem as there is only 4 of us but some of the villas advertise themselvs as sleeping 8/10 but how you get that many sitting round the pool or inside beats me.

We tend to go for a 4 bedroom as you can get 2 sitting areas so the adults and the kids can have some time apart.

If you're having a split stay then I'd go for the villa last, at least you can have everything washed for going home.

Something we often comment on. And the bigger the villa, the worse the problem.

Look for a home that has had its deck extended . As a part of the basic furniture package the home should have either a chair or a lounger for each person but I agree usually you can't use all the sides of the pool deck as one side is usually very narrow.

like a home from home and loads of space to move around in and not feeling trapped in a hotel room.
Having you own pool is great ,not having to share it with others & not being splashed & not worrying that someone in the pool has had a wee:rotfl:
Trust me your gonna love villa life.

Wow, thanks everyone. You have made it sound fab, i think that this will be a more relaxing way to do disney, and like you all said we can decide if we want to stay in for a meal or go out. To be honest when we went in Jan we stayed a the courtyard by marriott near the crossroads, that was great because of all the restaurants within walking distance, and also DTD was a 15min walk so was fab (especially to roll back from Raglan Road after some complimentary whiskey tasting) but, i know, i know this might sound daft, DH and i both got sick and tired of deciding where to go for tea etc. When we have stayed in Orlando we have usually done a twin centre so found the two weeks ideal for parks etc, but hard going on the food DH put on 12 lb (haha i got away with 5lb) any way i have got wobble gob like Deb
So thanks very much i am really looking forward to this trip, it is true once you get bitten by the bug it is useless you just can't fight it, we are going again in 2010, just DH and myself, (and hopefully we will by then have adopted the child of our dreams) and will be hopefully staying onsite, i think variety is the spice of life and will try and make each trip slightly different
