What to do with a sick toddler?

I'm new at this. She's never been sick like this before. She started vomiting early Saturday morning (about 5-6 times). I talked to her pediatrician and she told me that a virus IS going around and to slowly give her bland foods and drinks with no color, stuff like that. And also make sure she pees at least once evry 4-6 hours. If anything didn't change, than I was to call her back. I did as I was told and she felt better later on that night.

On Sunday, she was feeling fine, running around playing, chasing the cat, being bad...just being her normal self. So I'm like finally, she's ok. But now, today she started vomiting again (twice). After the first time, she perked back up and was singing along with the Little Einsteins and chasing the cat again...but THEN she threw up again and has been sleeping off and on all day since. She also had diarrhea today which she DIDN'T have on Saturday. I called the pediatrician again and she told me that this was good because the virus is trying to leave her system and to get back to feeding her bland stuff, make sure she drinks Pedialyte, and that she can drink a little ginger ale (only about 1 ounce)....BUT if she starts throwing up again tonight into tomorrow, than give her a call back so that we can take her to the office.

Right now she's still sleeping and hasn't thrown up again. I hope that it's over but I don't know what else to do. She seems so miserable. What do you think? Any ideas?

The ped also said that a stomach virus can sometimes be out of wack which was probably why she felt better on Sunday but was sick again today.....:(

i'm sorry! i hate stomach bugs!

My little boy has a hard time shaking them when they hit. I will often have to keep him on clear liquids for 24 hours, and no milk products for 3 days.

Good mom thoughts, and healthy wishes to the rest of you!

Thank You :goodvibes

Try dry toast and limit juices, give her a bland diet for a couple of days. Try to keep her quiet. Isn't being a Mom/nurse fun?

Any ways on how I can get her to drink Pedialyte? Unfortunately, I don't have the popsicle ones available....just the juices. I gave it to her to drink and the face she made was priceless. You would have thought I gave her rotten milk or something....:)

I'm sorry your DD isn't feeling well. Both of my kids hate pedialyte, so I keep some Gatorade on hand for when they get a stomach bug. Keep your DD drinking lots of fluids. If she is running a fever, you can give her some baby tylenol. Otherwise, just keep her as comfy as possible.

Usually, the kids sleep with me when they're sick. Last time, we threw blankets over the sofa with DD and I sleeping on one sofa and DS sleeping on the other, in case they needed me during the night, which they often did.

Those stomach bugs can really upset a child's digestive system and your DD might have some diarhea for a few days as her system recovers.

Good Luck!

BRAT diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. First clear liquids like diluted apple juice, pedialyte, flat ginger ale or sprite for variety. Then start with the b.r.a.t. I smash the bananas a little, make a little brown rice, get fav applesauce and lightly butter the toast. Also, acidolpholus is a great way to re-establish the intestines after they've been through the mill. I think Bifdus might be the children's version of this. Try your health food store.
side note: my doc told me to dilute gatorade 50% as it contains lots of sodium so if you go that route, dilution might be something you'd consider.

I would hold off on the Gatorade. I have had an adult GP tell me that it just makes diarrhea worse, and I imagine it would be even more so for a child.
Here is a pediatrician talking about it:
Gatorade bad idea for diarrhea
