We have been members since 1998 (BW). We are making our first visit to Vero Beach at the end of this month. We are traveling with children ages 11 & 19. What is there to do at Vero Beach? We were thinking about fishing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, does anyone know of good restaurants in the area?

We ate at squidlips in Sebastian (www.squidlips.com may work). Casual, on a peer over the water, GREAT food. Captain Hirams was our second choice.

There were people fishing on the beach and there are some fishing trips from local vendors (deep sea and others). Ask at guest services when you arrive (or call ahead) ... Most places are closed on Mondays.

There was pretty much nothing near the resort, we went exploring to find putt-putt and ice cream on 2 occasions but did not find anything. Thought the are would be more touristy ... was expecting a laid-back Jersey shore type of environment but was wrong. (of course, we did not ask at guest services before heading out ... we assumed we'd find something!)

We were at Vero in July, and pretty much stayed on the property for the week. However, we did venture out one night to Captain Hiriam's and thought it was a good meal and fun atmosphere. We also ate at all of the choices at the resort - Bleachers has pizza you can take back to your room or eat by the pool, as well as good quick sandwiches (I liked the chicken salad platter for lunch!), Shutters has a small menu, but it was good, the Green Cabin Room has a great view if you sit on the porch, and I would highly recommend Sonya's Seafood Buffet if you like seafood!

As for things to do, your younger child, at least, should find the teen activities to be a fun way to spend the evening - they do campfires for the teens, as well as other things.

We also rented waverunners and had a blast! They also rent sailboats. Either rent or take boogie boards with you too (we bought some at WalMart for about $15). I'd suggest taking a frisbee or football if your kids like that. We took our boys (and gathered others) to play an impromptu football game on the bocce lawn. The boardwalk area is a place to go at night to use the night vision goggles if you are interested in the turtles.

There is a mall with movie theatre nearby, we met some people who went, but we never made it ourselves. They also went to an outlet mall that was near.

For a fishing charter book w/ Capt. Gus Brugger in Sebastian. He's the best. Check out his website www.sebastianfishingguides.com. He will get you into some big fish.
Also, at the resort there is a pond with panfish and bass for catch and release, so bring some light FW tackle.

At Vero there is nothing to do! Ahhhh – heaven!
Just kidding! Y our kids can enjoy sailing, surfing, lots of good shopping and if you ask at the front desk they can refer you to a ton of ocean exscurions you can take like dolphin and manatee watching. Have a blast!
