What to do in San Diego on July 4th?

We will be in San Diego the week of July 4th. We plan on going to Sea World and the San Diego zoo on days *other* than the 4th (the Sea World days are set by add-on experiences and cannot change), but currently have "the beach" penciled in for the 4th. However - I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations? Could we go to the Safari park in the morning and still be able to get somewhere to see fireworks? If we go to the beach, do we need to get there at 7am and stay all day (not my thing! :rotfl2:) or can we do something else that day as well? Is there somewhere better than the beach to see fireworks in general? Are there any festivals we should make sure we don't miss?

Thanks!

There are a LOT of things happening on the Fourth of July here in San Diego. Here's a link to the current list of fireworks displays and celebrations: http://www.san-diego-beaches-and-adventures.com/san-diego-fireworks.html

Unfortunately, I have always had to work on that day so I have never been to any of these lol.

What I can say is that the zoo is actually relatively slow on the Fourth of July because, well, most people are out at picnics or getting spots for fireworks, so the zoo can be pretty quiet. Sounds like fireworks are important to you though.

Also, on the 4th of July, the beaches are very crowded, and you need to be there early to get a good spot and more important - a parking spot
