Not going until April, but it is never to early to plan. We will leave on either a thurs. or fri., and hope to make it to the Carolina's (south is ideal). We were planning of a 4-5 am start. Should we leave earlier? We drove a few years ago and left about noon, was not bad hit traffic in White Plains but it still was moving.

Well, I always tried to leave around 4-6pm from Carver. This usually got me through NYC by 10pm (usually little traffic) and had no other traffic issues. Avoided the DC area issues and usually pulled into Deltona about 1-3pm. Disney is another 45 minutes SW.

Halfway point is Roanoke Rapids NC.

As you can tell, I always drive straight through.

4-5am should let you miss most of the traffic in NY and DC. If you stop for the night, make sure that you plan for Jacksonville traffic. Get there before 3pm.

PS: you want to bring me some clam chowder? :-)

While I'm thinking of it, leave Thursday.

Friday, every one else on Spring Break is on the road, It was miserable the year I left on the Friday before Spring Break. Lines at the NJ Pike rest stops were unbelievably long at all of them and traffic sucked until I hit DC.

My wife hates to fly.
The first time we went to Walt Disney World, April 2004 with my 3 year old daughter We decided to go to WDW a couple of months before we went with little planning. We rented some points off the DIS forum, checked the airfares a couple of times and picked up a trip tick from AAA.

We drove from my office in downtown Boston to WDW Old Key West stopping only for gas and bathroom breaks.

After the first 3-4 hours in the car driving the rest of the way to WDW isn't that bad; more like a series of short trips.

The traffic was a mess from Hartford through Delaware on the way down.
It rained from North Carolina to Boston, Mass. on the way home

Me and my wife alternated turns driving our Nissan Xterra when we stopped for gas. My 3 year old held out a lot better than I thought she would on the way down and on the way back to Boston, WITHOUT, tapes, DVDs, video games, just a lot of singing and sleeping.

It's not that Bad!!!

April 2005 we caught a break in fares and flew down and back out of Logan on a non-stop with American Airlines , $504 round trip total for the 3 of us.

April 2006 we caught a break in fares so we flew down and back out of Logan on a non-stop with Song/Delta , $496 round trip total for the 3 of us.

The 2007 story and stops are pretty much the same as 2004.

We drove from my office in downtown Boston to WDW, Orange Lake Country Club, stopping only for gas and bathroom breaks.

After the first 3-4 hours in the car driving the rest of the way to WDW isn't that bad; more like a series of short trips.

If all goes well,
The creek don't rise,
and there ain't no melt down,
We'll do it all again next year.

Good Luck all,
Joe

As the story goes;
I always compare the cost and time of flying with the cost of driving.
If flying cost more than twice the cost of driving and it's not a non-stop round trip flight then we drive.
This year, back in May, when the April 2010 spring break fares and schedules came out we caught a break with a Delta non-stop, round trip Boston to Tampa flight, $717 total for the 3 of us.
Driving for us, gas and tolls cost about $400 round trip.
Along for the ride we take a couple bags of snacks, a big cooler and a small cooler filled with sandwiches and drinks.
We stop for gas, breaks and to switch drivers every 200 miles, 3-4 hours, that takes about 10-15 minutes. That's all we need unless we decide to grab something to eat at one of the mall/trip centers where we stop for gas, that usually takes an extra half hour.
We don't take our time and we don't try to hurry it up, we just do what we have to or want to do.
It's really not that big a deal, it's Just bunch of short 3-4 hour trips, not a long 22 hour drive.
Good luck all,
Joe

We're in Southern NH and are leaving (this Sunday!) at 3am. Love that the clocks go back, so really we're leaving at 4am.

We're hoping to get to So. Carolina, but will settle for North. It all depends on how much progress we make and how well our daughter deals with the car time.

In previous years (without a kid in tow) we've stopped in Rocky Mount, NC, Fayettesville, NC (or just outside) and one year made it all the way to Daytona in about 19 hours, our first destination to meet up with family who flew. Another time we attempted the trip straight through, but ended up collapsing in Georgia somewhere (that was a non-Disney trip, we were headed to North Miami Beach - but all of these other trips were from Boston)

Are you going with kids? Since you're leaving on a weekday, take rush hour traffic into consideration. Maybe leave at night, drive through (while switching off drivers) and make a stop during the day instead?

We're going in April too leaving from Southeastern Mass. I planned on leaving around 5 and trying to make it to Fayetteville. Are you planning on booking a motel in the Carolinas and trying to make it there, or just drive and try to find something when you get tired?

Joe- Thanks for the breakdown, I didn't even think about tolls. I did get the book Drive I95, which breaks it down every 15 miles with gas, food and hotels.

That is awesome. I looked into flights the other day for 4-19 to 4-24 for 6 and it said over $4500:scared1:
