Watching Roseanne the other night and heard them talking about the "loose meat sandwiches" that they serve at their diner. What ARE these?

We sure dont have these here in the Deep south where I am from. Is this a Northern or Midwestern thing?

Thanks!

If I were going to guess, and I would have to, since I have never heard the term, I would say it sounds like deli meat? Sliced turkey, roast beef, ham, ect.

On Roseanne, didn't it look more like sloppy joes? Like ground up beef with seasonings on a bun??

Loose meat sounds so gross to me, but I love me some sloppy joes!

It's meat, very often pork, that has been pulled apart and can be mixed with BBQ sauce and served on a bun. Mmmmmm good!

I found some loose meat sandwich recipes on the internet and they all used ground beef. They sounded good too!

pulled pork. It is shredded pork, on a bun, usually with a sauce.

i have watched every episode of roseanne and can say that it is my FAVORITE show (weird i know). anyway her loose meat sandwiches are ground beef with spices in a hamburger bun. however, there is no sauce with the meat like sloppy joes. in roseanne they call their sandwiches "sloppy joes without the slop".

Thanks! I knew it looked like ground beef she was stirring (blech). I cant imagine this type of sandwich being appetizing at all without some type of sauce to drown out the ground beef taste.

I agree. It has been years since I have watched her show but I clearly remember her using gound beef. I think her and Tom even started a restaurant back then selling the sandwiches.

We have them here, but they are never called "loose meat". A local restaurant called "NuWay" has been serving these sandwiches at their locations here for decades. It is ground beef all crumbled up (about the consistency you would expect in a taco). There is some spice(flavorful, not hot)and probably small bits of onion mixed in. It is slightly moist(again like taco meat), and served on a bun with the same condiments you'd get with a hamburger. You can even get cheese. They are really good, but they are a hazard in the car as little crumbs of the meat will be all over the place if you try to eat while driving. Their advertising slogan is "Crumbly is good". :)

She got it from Tom. They are an Iowa thing and I do believe they opened a restaurant there for awhile. But there are others in Iowa that sell them. I'm from Iowa and they are called "maid-rites". My mom worked at a MaidRite in Iowa as a teenager. They are made of groundbeef and spices. They are actually very good. My mom could never make them homemade the same way they were at a MaidRite, then again, I was a kid and McD's was a 4 star restaurant to me then too! :teeth:

Its a mid-west thing, they have them in ILL too.
Just ground beef seasoned and kept warm in big steam tables.Served on hamburger buns.
They are called maid-rites here too.
taste awsome, but like Micca said they can be very messy!!!!!!!!!!

Unique Loose Meat Sandwich
In 1926, Fred Angell, a respected butcher in Muscatine, Iowa, combined a special cut and grind of meat with a selected set of spices and created the one and only Maid-Rite sandwich.

As legend goes, Mr. Angell asked a delivery man, at his restaurant, to taste his newest sandwich creation. After a few bites, the taster exclaimed, “You know, Fred, this sandwich is just made right.” Thus our signature sandwiches name was born. Maid-Rite has withstood the test of time for over 78 years.

From our humble beginnings of a restaurant owned by a man with a dream of serving great tasting food, the sandwich that was “TOO GOOD TO BE A PATTY” was established. Maid-Rites are cooked in a delicious special seasoning in our special cut of ground beef and served on a warm home-maid bun.

browned hamburg, spices, etc as detailed in last post. They are "smaller" too and so one who likes them - brags about how many they eat. I don't care for them BUT

the small brick building in Greenville has a unique "gum wall". As you approach the drive thru window, it is tradition to place your gum on the wall................ewy, ewy, ewy. That may just be why I never liked them :rotfl:
