Help! We know New Jersey schools are out first week of November; New Orleans and parts of Louisiana out for Mardi Gras; Michigan seems to have school holidays in January-February -- same for Pennsylvania and some in New England. These are "school holidays" not associated with official U.S. Holidays. What other States have these & when? Thanks!

Massachusetts has winter break 2/21-25 and NH is the following week. Both Massachusetts and NH have spring break 4/18-22.

In our area there is no fall break other than one day here and there. We have 2 weeks off for Winter Break Dec. 17th through Jan. 3rd this year. We have Spring Break the end of March every year, and that is it for us except for the occassional day here and there like MLK day, President's day, Memorial day, ect. I WISH I lived where they get a full week in October or February, but then they have to start earlier or end later or both (which would be fine with me.) I used to think these other breaks were rare, I have lived in several states and never had them, but I think they are getting more common. I would love a year round calendar for my kids!

Also John, please be aware that calendars for schools are not state wide. We live in the Chicago area which includes dozens of different school districts and each can make their own calendar. Our town alone, of about 130,000 people, has 2 distinct school districts. We often have the same breaks, but NOT always. Also, private schools are not always on the same schedule as the public schools in the same town.

Was actually on a schoolboard in Chicago area western suburbs. Crazy quilt of vacation schedules out there! States that have one-week "winter breaks" make a lot of sense. Easier scheduling for sports, music, etc. And families with students + parent-teacher can make plans!

Minnesota schools have the second Thursday Friday of October off for conferences. Monday of that week is Columbus day.

(We call in Minnesotan week at Disney World - particularly when the Twins are doing well every forth person is in a Twins cap).

Minnesota: Nov. 5th-7th & 24th-28th, Dec. 23rd-Jan2nd, Feb 19th-21st, March 19th-27th

Maine: Nov. 24 - 26, Feb 21 - 25 and April 18 - 22

Some schools tack on In-Service days before or after these dates to make the vacations longer for the kids.

Like my older daughter's school has a half day on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and then Wed. Thurs and Friday off.....Then in April She gets a half day the Thursday before April break and the Friday is a whole day and then April break. (which is why our next WDW vacation is going to be in April :D )

Thank you to everyone for school holidays! Still looking for Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan -- among others!

NY public schools tend to have off in Sept/Oct for the Jewish holidays. Our kids get a few days off for Rosh Hasannah and Yom Kippur. (Sorry if spelled wrong!) In 2005, alot of the schools are off for a few days in March for Easter and a full week in April for Passover.

I was born and raised in Maine and my girls were born and raised in Maine so for the last 30+ years the April vacation has always been the 3 week in April. The key nowadays is that it is the same week as Patriot's Day (not to be confused with Patriot Day which is the national 9/11 holiday, but Patroit's Day commemorates the battle of Lexington and Concord. :D )

TandyR -- I had at least six ancestors on both sides of the line in the Revolutionary War. Good thing they were bad shots! Thanks for the info.

Virginia is 3rd week of March (March 21-25 2005).

For what it's worth, the county we live in, in Georgia, schools will have a week off Feb 21-25 and next year will have 1 week in September as well as the regular weeks, (Thanksgiving-full week, Christmas-2 weeks, Spring Break-1 week in April)

They get misc. teacher workdays throughout the year and they had Election day off.

It's really hard to say here in my area in Ohio as we have some traditional calendar schools and some year round schools. The year round schools go for nine weeks and then out for three or something like that. The traditional will be out wed-sun for thanksgiving and then middle of december thru first mon. of Jan. for Christmas break. Spring break comes the end of march/first of April, and then school lets out the beginning of June.

These are approximate as I'm not looking at my school calendar.

West Virginia here....

As with others, these dates are not uniform throughout the state, but it's pretty close.

Thanksgiving week (Nov. 22-26)
Christmas (Dec. 23-Dec. 31)
Martin Luther King Jr. (Jan. 17)
February Break (if no snow days) (Feb. 18-21)
Spring Break (if no snow days) (Mar. 25-Apr. 1)
Spring Break (if we had snow days) (Mar. 25-Mar. 29)
Memorial Day (May 30)

We have a couple of teacher workdays were there are no students thrown in, but not many.

Hope this helps!

I would say that is true for NY City and downstate public schools, not necessarily NY State public schools. In our area, we don't have any of the Jewish holidays. Spring break for our particular school district is the week following Easter every year, but several of the surrounding districts here have very different vacation schedules.

Alabama has a week off mid-March and this year Easter falls about a week later. Hope that helps.
