What state have you been closest to without actually going in it?

My oldest DS was telling me how he was only a few yards from Utah at the Four Corners spot but didn't want to wait in line to actually step in all four states. He could see Utah but never stepped foot in it!

The closest I was to another state without going in was probably California when I was out in Vegas. At one point we were only 20 some miles away. :car:

We won't count flying over! :bounce:

Probably about 20 miles. Usually if we are very close, we go out of our way to drive over to the next state if we've never been there. If it gets much over 20 miles, you could end up with an hour+ detour, depending on the roads - so we don't bother.

I think I've been in 22 states and it's getting more important to me to try to make it to all or most of them, so I'd probably detour a lot further now.

Oops - I read the question wrong. I'll say Indiana - because I was in Chicago.

I've been in all of the "Lower 48." So I'd have to say being in BC or AB would have put me as close to Alaska as I've ever been. As the crow flies I almost think that I was closer to Alaska when I was in Western Central AB than Vancouver.

Iowa. I'm only about 90 minutes or so from the border, but I've just never felt any compelling reason to go there. I've been in all of the other surrounding states, but I've never headed West.

Probably Washington. I spent a day in Vancouver before our Alaskan cruise.

Probably South Carolina been everywhere around it just not in the actual state.

I've been known to drive 50+ miles out of my way just to drive over a state line.
However, I never made it to New Hampshire,we were only a few miles away in MA.

I was also just a few miles away from British Columbia once while in Washington State and didn't cross the border.

I've only been in Wis. via Lake Superior while fishing on our boat. Since I didn't actually STEP in it does it count as NOT stepping foot in it?

Bliss!

Otherwise, I've been in 49 of the fifty. Maybe in a few years I'll venture up to catch the northern lights and be able to check them all off my list.

Not exactly what you're asking but.....
the only reason I was in Michigan is b/c DH took a wrong turn while we were driving to visit his sister and family in Illinois. I never would have set foot in Michigan if he didn't take a wrong turn...

I was on a sightseeing bus trip in Branson, MO. The driver took us to the Arkansas line but did not cross over. This was during President Clinton's era. He wanted to show us where the President was from.

I would have to say Nevada. I travel to California quite often and never driven to Nevada.

Probably have to say Kansas and Arkansas.... and it was just this weekend. DD and spent a few days in MO. We were pretty far south and west in MO, but didn't travel into either of those states. Also, I lived in either MA or NH my entire life, but only spent time in VT in the past year. ..............P

I lived in the Four Corners area for over 10 years and never made it to the monument :teeth: but I have been to all four states--just not at the same time.

I seem to have been avoiding an entire country. I grew up in Michigan and moved back here about 5 years ago. I have lived an hour and a half at most from Canada all that time and I've never even been across the bridge. :teeth: I really don't have anything against our neighbors to the north--I've just never made it up there! It's on my to do list now.

Probably Connecticut. Which is a shame because my paternal grandmother and my maternal grandfather were both born and raised there. I'd like to visit their hometowns someday.

For a quick guess I would say Texas... we drove through the very top corner last year on the way to New Mexico. We never stopped though, so I was sitting the entire time. Does that count?

Oh wait, nevermind! I thought you said where you've never stepped foot into.

For being closest to without going in, probably North Dakota.
