What size TV would you get for a dorm?

She is also considering commuting and getting an apartment with my eldest daughter who is graduating college in May.

I say pick a TV that she will be able to use AFTER more. 32" or 40" would be good.

Dorms are nothing like you remember either.

My daughter is in a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom apartment dorm. Each apartment has a full kitchen, living room, and laundry room. The dorm has a coffee shop in the lobby and a 24 hour Waffle House style food place in the lobby as well.

The dorm costs more each semester then the tuition, fees, books, and food plan combined.

Yes, I realize many dorms are now like apartments or at least suites. DD graduated in June and had an apartment type arrangement. No laundry in it however. Had to use the communal laundry in the basement.

Even way back when I lived in a suite in my junior and senior years. Three double bedrooms, one full bath plus a half bath, and a small common area. No kitchen or laundry. Microwaves were just starting to become common. I think each pair of roommates had their own small B&W TV with rabbit ear antennas. No real room for a big TV.

There are still plenty of standard dorm rooms.

Dd just graduated in May. We bought a 32in for her to take with her. Black Friday of her freshman year she bought a 50 inch which she used until she graduated. They watched lots of dvds which she also bought on Black Friday. They had lots of movie parties in her room. Even if they didn’t have anything planned, she would put a dvd on and leave her door open and several girls would wander in.

Unless you know the set up of the dorm, this is something I'd wait on. My daughter is a sophomore and wouldn't have had space to put a tv in either dorm room she's had without rearranging a lot of things.

She didn't care enough about having one. She streams stuff on her laptop or phone.

Hmm, I think the one in our son's room is in the 36 - 40 inch range. He uses it for his XBox. He streams tv on his laptop.

I think DDs TV is 43 inches.

While it's true that many don't have a tv in their dorm, I think it's a nice addition for socializing. Too much time is spent by teens with their heads buried in their electronics....alone, not interacting with others. (my opinion)

DD's room is the "gathering place", since they have a tv that is watchable by a group.

They're not all like that. My son just graduated last year and was in a traditional dorm room (2 beds in a single room with bathrooms down the hall) his first 2 years there. The school had the newer style dorms, but those came with a much higher price tag.
