Hello everyone, and Merry Christmas! I got a Canon S5 IS for Christmas this year (to me, from me! :thumbsup2 ), and I have a question regarding the memory card. What size memory card would you recommend? We're going to Disney in June, and I want to make sure I have plenty of memory for all of my pictures! The camera came with a 32 MB, and I used that up really quick just on my dogs this morning. Thanks for your advice! :)

You should be able to find 2gb cards for under $20(easily), and under $10 after rebates if you try harder(FRYS). Buy at least 2(combine shipping) and always keep one in the camera, you would be shocked at the number of persons that have pulled out their camera only to realize that they left the card at home in the reader.

Since the camera only shoots jpeg I dont see you needing a bigger card, and it makes no sense to buy a smaller card since they would pretty much be the same price.

Some feel that taking too many pics on one card is too risky(all eggs... one basket), but for me I know having multiple cards equals increased odds of losing/dropping/damaging them. I would prefer to have one card with a 1000 pics safely inside the camera instead of having five cards with 200 pics each in my shirt pocket. Plus when carrying a backpack in a crowded park where you can easily get bumped, I would rather not have to switch cards.

Thank you for the advice! I just ordered 2 GB Ultra II from Circuit City....The cheapest I could find. :thumbsup2

Now if I can figure out how to use the new camera, I'll be all set!

Between now and your trip you may want to keep an eye out for 1 or 2 more cards on sale cheap. My D50 puts around 500-550 pictures on a 2GB card(@6mps) with an 8mp camera you'll get fewer. If you think you'd take more than that- which it seems many of us would I'd get a few more. Before X-mas this year I got a reg speed Sandisk 2gb for $6.99and a 2gb ultra2 for $17.99 at Circuit City. Watch for the deals. Better to have some extra than run out of memory, especially when traveling.

I agree 100%:thumbsup2

I have a 4gb for my Nikon and my Panasonics I have two or three 2gb and two 1gb cards.

Eventually I'll get another 4gb card but since I travel with my laptop to unload pics all the time too it's not a big rush.

I have 4 sandisk 2GB ultra II's. Two of those have never been opened. Grandson just got a new Canon Powershot A560 for christmas. I told him he could have one of the cards.

I have a new S3, and although only 5 pictures filled up the tiny card that came with it, I went to Disneyland for 5 days with two 1GB cards and one 2GB, and came home after that plus 9 days in San Diego with...a not-yet-full 1 GB card and totally empty other cards.

I kept checking to make sure pictures were being saved, because I just coudln't believe how many pictures were on that one card! And they weren't "small" pictures, either!

I kept finding good deals at buy.com on 1GB cards, that's why I had 2, and then DH bought 2 more...in total now we have something like 5 1GB cards and the one 2GB card, and we feel rather foolish, b/c we can't quite imagine EVER filling them all up!

I keep one 2GB card in the camera at all times and carry another 2GB in my bag. 4GB might be overkill depening on the image size you shoot and the number of pics. However, cards are so cheap now-a-days might as well get more than enough.

i'm embarrassed to say how many cards i used our last vacation:lmao::rolleyes1 (but multiply most of the above by 4) but i agree, go with at least a few 2gb cards, they are cheap, with jpg will last a long time( i get i think about 260 but that is raw) and nothing is more annoying than having to change cards and miss a shot you wanted, so that wouldn't happen as often with a bigger card. personally i'd get at least 2...if something happens to one card you have a backup and now you can take your time to get a good deal...not like me last vacation hunting around for a 2 gb under $70:eek:
