What should I ask for in an upgrade?

Hi,
I'm going to try and fax an upgrade request for the first time. I'm not quite sure how to go about it and have a few questions. Any help would be appreciated...

1) How far in advance should we fax over our requests? (We'll be there for Halloween week)

2) What should we ask for at the AKL and BWI for upgrades? We don't want much but would love a great view.(We have booked standard rooms at both resorts. Two adults, no children)

3) Should we expect to hear back from the resorts or just hope for the best once we arrive?

4) Should we be specific? Are they expecting us to tell them exactly what we want?

1) I've always faxed 3-4 days in advance.

2) A better view or room location, for the AKL, maybe a Savanna View.

3) I've never heard back after faxing. I just waited to see what we got (if anything) upon check in.

4) If you want to be specific, that's up to you. I've always just gone right to the bottom line, without making the fax too long. I figured the longer the fax, the better chance of them losing interest in reading it! I always state our name, date of check in, or reservation number and the room we've reserved (standard view, etc.) Then I simply state that if there is a better view or room location at the time of check in, I'd appreciate a complimentary upgrade if possible. Make sure you state complimentary!
