What setting on printer should I use?

I have an Epson printer and I want to print a dark transfer. The problem is that on my printer there is no choice for transfer paper. The choices are:
plain paper, 360 dpi ink jet paper, photo quality ink jet paper, matte paper-heavyweight, photo paper, premium glossy photo paper, photo quality glossy film or ink jet transparencies. Which setting do I use?

Thank you so very much, Carolyn

I do mine on regular paper.

Then change the print quality and/or flip the design when necessary.

Thank you for your reply. I don't understand what "print quality" is. I bought the Avery dark transfers. Should I just print on the transfer paper just like printing on regular paper?

Thanks again, Carolyn

I just printed my first transfer on my HP printer and mine also did not have a setting for transfer paper. It had settings for various photo papers, presentation paper, transparencies, etc. There was a setting for "other specialty paper" and that is what I chose. I did change the print quality to "best" as the directions stated. Do you think I should just print the rest of my designs on the "plain paper" setting?

Also, I ruined my first transfer because my color cartridge ran out of ink halfway through printing the design. I never get a low ink message with this printer. It drives me crazy. I used to always get one with my old printer. There supposedly is some way to manually check the ink level, but I can't figure out how to do it. I just replaced the color cartridge and reprinted it and it turned out fine. I think I will just go ahead and replace the black cartridge also and after I finish printing all my transfers, I will put the old black cartridge back in and finish using it up. Tell me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming that if you are printing a color design that has black in it, it takes the black ink from the black cartridge - right?!?!?

I'm going to iron on my first design tomorrow. With all the reading on these boards and all the stressing I have been doing over these stupid shirts, you would think I would have at least one shirt to show for it!!!

My printer is an Epson, an older one, and I can't find out where to find the setting for "best". I have checked everywhere. I printed the designs out on paper and they look good but I don't know how it will be on the transfers. Let me know how yours come out.

Not to confuse the issue but I have an Epson Photo R200 printer. When I'm printing a "Photo Printing Wizard" comes up. Under Printing Preferences there are a few options: Draft, Text, Text & Image, Photo, and Best Photo. I print mine using the "Text" setting. Here's why. Some time ago there was a thread about this issue and I believe it was Kristine (although my memory is not what it used to be) had done quite a lot of research. She said printing on the "Photo" or "Best Photo" quality will shoot too much ink at the paper and cause running of the ink.

When I print using the "Text" setting the transfer does not look so great when it is printed (ie, there are lines in the image) but once it is ironed on the quality sharpens and the lines disappear and I have never had a problem with running ink on any of my transfers. So there you have it. There are probably several opinions on this. This is my opinion and it has worked well for me. YMMV.:goodvibes

Funny you mentioned this because I was thinking the same thing about my printer. I print almost everything using the "fast draft" setting on my printer and it is plenty dark enough. I just printed out an e-mail on fast draft this morning and it looks as black as can be. When I got my new computer last summer, the tech from Best Buy who set everything up told me that the HP printers print really dark.

The transfer I printed out yesterday on the "best" setting has more pastel colors in it so I don't think I will have a problem with running. The next design I want to print is a stick figure family, so that have a lot of red and black and I don't know what setting to print it on. I was thinking of just using the normal setting. Those are the shirts that I'm stressing about because I want to use red shirts and I don't want the red to bleed through the white background. So not only do I have to worry about how to print the transfer, now I have to be really careful when ironing so as to not iron too long and make the red bleed through! Oh well - if it doesn't turn out, I'm out a transfer and a red shirt I got at Michaels for $2.50!!! I have to make three of those stick figure family shirts.

I didn't get around to washing my shirts yesterday, so I will be doing that today and ironing tomorrow.

OK, I printed one transfer of the dark transfer last night. It said in the instructions to let it dry for one day. I printed it on the regular paper setting, best quality. I can't find the "text" setting. I have an older Epson 880 printer. It prints really good but I have never tried the transfers. I'll most probably try ironing it on my tshirt this week-end. So much going on now and I don't want to rush it. I did notice that when I set it on the best quality, the black is really black. I sure hope it doesn't run. I read somewhere that you should wash it in cold water with vinegar in the wash. Has anyone heard anything about it?

Thanks, Carolyn
