What resturant do you miss that is not around anymore?

I finally found something I liked at Casa Gallardo just in time for them to close

The Ponderosa in Eureka has been "closed for renovations" forever

Ugh, I didn't know. That was my backup after the one in Fenton closed. I guess now I really have none.

Tumbleweeds. Closed 7-8 years ago and still can't find a decent Tex-Mex type resturant to this date.

The one I used to go tho when passing through Cincy closed too. I loved that place!

We had a local restaurant called Hershey's Steakhouse. Very old school with dim lighting and lots of dark wood. They had whole hard-boiled eggs at the salad bar which we found amusing.

They had amazing prime rib and we went there for birthdays and Valentines day. Then a couple years ago, the day after Valentines day, they locked the doors. Shut down, sold the building and it was bulldozed, replaced with an urgent care center. Kind of ironic considering all the red meat that was consumed there!

I forgot about Baker's Square. DH and I used to go there a lot when we were dating. I would get the candy cane pie with hot chocolate around the holidays.

Given that they say the average life of a restaurant is 7 years, I guess I shouldn't be surprised so many of my favorites are gone

But we do have one that has been around 75 years, and another 55 years. Another closed after 67 years, the founders children wanted to retire and none of their children wanted to take it over.

Shakey's pizza. Best pepperoni

The pizza place that was at Cinderella City mall---they did wood fire or coal fire, I think. Best dough.

Sugee's (?) (Aurora, CO). loved going there with my dad when I was 10-12 years old.

Dolly Madison ice cream parlors

there was a buffet in Aurora (near the drive in on Colfax) called the King's Table or Royal Fork. One long buffet line, no stations. I loved going there with dad. The food wasn't the best, but it was awesome for a kid who never got to go to buffets other than there.

Oh, and this Chinese place, I think it was on University in Denver? Little mom and pop place, my parents would take us there on their anniversary every year.

There was a Mexican restaurant attached to a bar by our apartment in Aurora (off of Peoria)--I think it was Sandtrap bar or something. Best Tex-Mex food.

We used to have a Shakey's Pizza and a King's Table Buffet here in San Diego. We went to King's Table all the time. I guess the closest now is HomeTown Buffet.

I miss Johnny Carino's. There are still some around but the closest is hours away from us. I used to love their Bowtie Festival pasta.

Oh, I thought of another one. When I was a kid (30+ years ago) there was a place called the Anchor Inn, I know they were a chain but not sure how far they reached. It was all you can eat but not a buffet, you could just keep ordering things. They had frog legs, cod, chicken, ribs, all kinds of stuff. I used to love going there as a kid.

Hilltop Steak House in Saugus, MA. BEST steaks ever, huge salads, terrific bread/rolls. The line on weekend nights would wrap around the building. They had life-sized cattle statues "grazing" in the front yard- always kept the kids busy, checking out the cattle!

Miguel's Mexican in Marblehead, MA. They had the most extensive menu I've ever seen- dozens of fillings for everything- tacos, quesadillas, burritos, tostadas, nachos, etc. Long, long lines, but they'd serve margaritas in the lobby, so nobody really cared how long they had to wait! We had no idea they were closing, but we went one night and they were totally gone; the bank that owned the building tore it down and put in a parking lot. Talk about "paved paradise!"

China Sails restaurants on Boston's North Shore. This was a locally-owned chain (maybe only 2 or 3 locations), but it's the Chinese food I grew up on, and measure all others by. It was surely NOT authentic, but boy, was it good!

There used to be a fast food Mexican food place, started with a Z--Zapatta or something like that. They had these really good cheese roll up things, cheese chillitos or something??

I was thinking that you must mean Zantigo. I used to love their Chilitos. But I googled it, and the chain used to be called Zapata before it was renamed Zantigo. So, we were both right.

Apparently it still exists, but there are only 5 locations, all located in Minnesota.

Edit: Thought of another. Anyone miss Bahama Breeze? The food was just okay, but the drinks and atmosphere were like a mini vacation.

Bahama Breeze is still around, but the only entree dh & I like is their Calypso Shrimp - it is so spicy and good.

I do really miss Mrs. Winners. Not the finest of dining, I know, but I loved their chicken biscuits, and they served them all day. It used to be my favorite ritual whenever I visited my home town to get a Mrs Winner's Chicken Biscuit, but it closed a year or two ago and I haven't see another location anywhere.

There are still lots of them in many states, but we've never eaten there, prefer Bojangles the few times we allow ourselves fried chicken, or chicken biscuits.

3 Tbsp. each - bourbon, soy sauce, brown sugar, lemon juice
1/2 Tbsp. chopped onion
1 clove garlic

Marinate 4 hours, turning every 30 minutes.

Never went to Diamonds or any other place in Ortley Beach. It was strictly Seaside Heights/Park for me.

I was thinking of automats part of the way thru reading this thread, but you beat me in posting it.

In Manhattan and environs I think the automats were Chock Full 'O Nuts, while in the Philly region they were Horn & Hardart. For anyone not familiar, plates of food were displayed in little cubicles covered by a glass door. You put coins into the slot next to your selected cubicle, then opened the door and retrieved your meal. I don't remember how beverages were handled.

I can't recall if the food was any good, but as a kid, that wasn't the point. I was fascinated by the technology.

I also remember Harvest House cafeterias in some of the larger Woolworth's.

The Automat in nyc was so much fun! i wish they would bring them back! and i do remember horn and hardart too, and back when woolworths had a cafe in it! But as for Diamonds in ortley, it was right on the ocean with these big flowing canopies, the most gorgeous ocean view and excellent food. everytime company would come up we would take them there.
