What Religion Doesn't Allow You to go out after dark on Friday?

I worked at the school store on the football field with another Mom last night. She said she can't work at the Friday night games because her religion doesn't allow her to go out after dark on Fridays. Her son is the QB for the team, so it must be very important to her (religion) since she never gets to watch her son play.

I wasn't sure how to ask her what the religion is - does anyone know? Just curious.

The Scaredy Cat religion??? How come her son can be outside??? Is it a "women can't be outside" kinda thing?

Doesn't the Jewish Sabbath begin at sunset on Friday?

I was thinking Orthodox Jew. The Sabbath begins at sunset on Friday and end sunset on Saturday.

Jewish Orthodox would also prohibit her from riding in a car (among other things) during the Sabbath.

Another vote for Jewish. I have several Jewish friends who can't do anything that is considered "work," which includes cooking and driving, during the Sabbath.

The odd thing is that Jewish tradition dictates that the child will be brought up in the religion of the mother, so the son would be Jewish as well, and playing sports would definitely be off-limits during the Sababth. :confused3

Jewish was my first thought (based on Friday night only), but I don't think that's it. Not to stereotype, but she's very blond and blue-eyed. Also, her whole family would be involved, which they aren't (obviously since her son still plays). I'm wondering Jehovah's Witness? Mormon? 7th Day Adventist? I just don't know.

Orthodox Jewish do not use any vehicles, electricity, gas, or do any labor on their Sabbath which runs from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday.

Her appearance has nothing to do with her religion- maybe he's "playing" not working.... or maybe they have left it up to him to decide.....

7th Day Adventist was my guesses....some of the stricter ones i work with dont go out after dark and can’t do anything that is not church related until after sundown on Saturday....

Maybe Seventh Day Adventist? Observation of their Sabbath day goes from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.

It is possible that she is practicing what ever religion and her son isn't. She could be Orthodox Jew and her DH and kids aren't. My BIL is Jewish and he has blond hair and blue eyes.

When I was younger I knew a girl who could not go out from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, she was Seventh Day Adventist, her farther was very devout!

We have many friends who are Jewish (one is a Rabbi) and they do not have Friday night restrictions (well, except for the Rabbi) - I believe they are Reformed. She would have to be an Orthodox Jew (I think) to have this restriction and I just don't think that's the case here (gut feeling - ignore the remark about her appearance - sorry!). In our area we have a very small Jewish population and I don't believe there any Orthodox Jews.

I'm thinking Seventh Day Adventist is the best guess - and I know there's a chuch in the area.

seventh day adventism does'nt preclude people from going out after dark on fridays.

the sabbath starts at sunset friday night, but the only restriction as far as that goes is from engaging in work or commerce. so no working, shoppping, going to a restaurant or anything that involves discussions of finances from sundown friday till sunset saturday. there's no restriction on going outside, but it would be unlikely that they would attend a sporting or other event on friday nite. social events can also be limited-you will never see an sda wedding on a friday nite or saturDAY. they are traditionaly held on sundays (we finaly schedualed ours on a saturday nite to not offend dh's family-sda-or my mom-catholic-).

honestly, even the most devout sda's i know (and whoa do i know some-my kids go to sda schools) would not interpret the doctine to preclude going to their child's sporting or other events IF it was important to the child. since it does'nt directly go against church practice, and it supports the parent/child bond it would be entirely acceptable.

just thought of something else though-if the concession stand sells meat or caffeine products the person if sda may be hesitant even outside the sabbath to participate in selling or preparing these items for sale. dietary doctrine is adhered to very strictly (and believe me, it goes way beyond veganism).

 Hummmm a new excuse to get me out of Friday Night football snack bar duty:rolleyes1

On Topic:
SDA came to mind also, I have had a couple of parents turn down helping out for this reason on Friday nights. Their kids play in the younger High School divisions and are done before sunset so I don't know if they skip the games.

You can cross Jehovah's Witness off the list. I was raised as one and they didn't have that rule.

I live in NYC where there are many many Orthodox Jews, and after their Sabbath meal, they are out talking walks at night, so I'd say it wasn't a Jewish thing. My SIL is a reform Jew, and she's never heard of it, either.

You're right....Observant Jews won't drive do any money exchanging etc,but they will walk, visit friends etc...
