I always use the highest quality setting possible. The quality is still lower than I'd like, but that's my fault, not the setting.
I've used Sandisk, Kingston, A-Data, and transcend memory cards. The only problem I have ever had was when I put two Sandisk cards through the wash. They both came out much cleaner, but only one worked after that.

There are also videos to buy for my software that show how to use it which can be very helpful when trying to figure out how to use a program to manipulate an image. Seeing is often easier then trying to follow a book.
