What others pay

I was in the gas station last night and had to pick my jaw up off the ground when the man ahead of me paid $4.59 each for a pint of ice cream (he bought 2). I couldn't believe the cost and I couldn't believe that people are willing to pay it. This was not some gas station out in the middle of nowhere. There's a major grocery store chain less than 1/2 mile down the road. He could have gotten a gallon of ice cream for less than he paid for one pint. :scared1: :confused3

Yes, but then sometimes only Haagen-dazs amaretto almond crunch will do. And then it doesnt matter how much no-name brand cookies and cream is sitting in the freezer. Who knows? Maybe he was getting it for his pregnant wife. Did you happen to notice whether he was buying pickles, too? :lmao:

LOL..no, he bought cigarettes (which the price of also makes me :scared1:)

Sometimes you need to get seventeen things done, a picking up the ice cream at the gas station manages to check off three things in a single stop - gas, ice cream, cigarettes.

If you've never paid through the nose due to convienence and having an immediate need - lucky you. But you can't tell whether this guy was a poor money manager, was a poor controller of impluse purchases, or had to get ice cream, had just come from the doctor which took an hour longer than expected, had be halfway across town to pick up his kid in twenty minutes, be back at this end of town in forty minutes to close on a mortgage. I've had days like that and they suck. Fortunately, I'm too busy just making it through my day to worry about the judgement of busybodies wondering why I'm getting ice cream at the gas station.

Whoa. I hope you have a nice, calm day.

Yeah, I'm the same way about Ben & Jerrys "Chubby Hubby". It's expensive, but worth every single penny.

Really? This bothers you? Pretty judgmental of you….you don’t know his circumstances, his reasons for buying ice cream at the gas station, and that’s because it’s none of your business. I’m guessing this is more than a gas station…you were at a “convenience store” with gas pumps. Some folks are willing to pay a little more for convenience.

You sound like my mother :rotfl2:

Carvel Ice Cream cake: "Do you know how many gallons of ice cream you could have bought for that price?"

A cup of soda out anywhere: "Do you know how many bottles of soda I could've gotten for that price?"

It's funny because she does it no matter who pays.

I don't usually have that much of an ice cream emergency that I would need to buy it from a gas station, but I have been known to pay a bit more for things out of the simple convenience of not having to go to another store.

Bothers me? No, just surprised at how much someone would spend on ice cream.

I think calling someone judgmental is pretty judgmental.

Agreed!

Perhaps as we write there is a man posting on another board about a bunch of crazies who pay a small fortune to stand outside and freeze their butts off while they watch some guy in a mouse costume prance around on a stage when they could be sitting at home with a nice pint of ice cream that cost less than $5. Value means different things to different people.

I was also thinking maybe his wife was pregnant and was having an ice cream emergency!!! With my youngest, I craved Ben and Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie ice cream!!

LMAO!!!! I have a friend who does that EXACT same thing. No matter what I buy, I did it wrong. She's continually harping on what I pay for Aleve. I have scoliosis/bulging discs in my lower back, and Aleve is the only non-narcotic thing that works when my back is aching. Whenever she sees me buying it (or sees it at my house) she'll go on and on about how I could have gotten 100 store brand asprin for a tenth of what I paid for the aleve. The fact that the asprin does nothing for the pain, doesn't matter - it's soooooo much cheaper.

:rotfl: Good point! I just can't believe that some people pay such close attention to what others pay for their things....

I'm with you. Just because you are surprised at what someone would pay for something doesn't mean you're judging them. I'm surprised by lots of stuff, but that doesn't mean I think the person is a bad person, dumb, stupid, ignorant, is "doing it wrong", etc. I'm just surprised - end of story.

And I'm surprised at others who think that to notice something makes you a 'busy body" who "pays too close attention" to what others are doing. Some people just happen to notice what is going on around them. So the OP was behind someone who paid a lot for ice cream and they noticed it. Why judge *them*?

Then why comment at all? And if you are going to comment, why use these smilies if you aren't judging? :scared1::confused3

I have to pay that price and more for a pint for my son with a dairy allergy. Rice dream is expensive.

As managing a gas station for 8 yrs I have seen it all. People want the convience. I had a customer one time and bought a whole thing of lottery tickets. Meaning I had to open my safe and write them out like I was putting them in the case. He came in the next day and I asked him how much he won. He said he won about half of what he paid. I think it was 350.00. People will grocery shop like the reg grocery store. It was none of my bus, but it was still mind blowing.
