I was checking on Ebay for prices on the Canon 60D just for information purposes. I found this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-USA-Canon-6...=63&clkid=7947608926143420533#ht_18501wt_1141

What drew my attention was the number of lenses and the types of lenses as compared to the prices on the auction. That huge 600-1300 lens?? How much of a piece of junk is this?

I hadn't planned on buying this, but I was wondering what others thought.

Most of those lenses are "low speed", even for what they are. "Junk" is a harsh word and one man's junk is another man's treasure, as the old adage goes.

Having said that, I just bought a 60D 18-135 bundle at BB on sale and I'm very pleased with it. I used some extra cash to buy a couple of lenses that I wanted and therein lies the key. If you don't want the "kit lens", which in this particular case, is one of the better Canon kit lenses, IMHO, then buy a body only for <$1000 (about 900) and buy a couple of nice lenses that you want and will use. That's another key. Lenses that are too difficult and aggravating to use rarely get used. The Tamrons are actually pretty good for what they are as long as you understand what that means.

It's at best a fair deal and at worst, too high priced for what it is.

Buy what you want, one piece at a time. Taking the time to do it right will serve you much better over the long haul.

Yes, as far as I'm concerned, all that crap is junk except the Nifty Fifty and the Tamrons and the camera can be bought for $900. $900+$125 plus less than a hundred (way less!) for a couple of questionable SDHC cards. That's about all you've really got in that kit as far as I'm concerned. Not a very good deal when you look at it in those terms.

(I'm not trashing any manufacturer in this opinion. It is just that; MY opinion.)

Go buy the 18-135 kit at BB or a local retailer or B&H. You'll never look back.

I wouldn't give $300 for all the other stuff besides the camera itself, so I think it is a ripoff.

Thanks for the reply Wilson. That was my plan. I was considering the 55-250 lens as well. I have the Rebel XT and the 70-300 zoom I already have will work with the 60D. Of course I have to buy new media cards since they have switched to SD. The 50mm is also on the list.

Thanks again,
Kim

I just ordered a 60D for $880(delivered).

I would say the 50mm 1.8 is worth $100
The two SD cards, might be worth $35 combined

The rest of it is of no value to me, but if you like that bag and case it might be worth an extra $35.

Those tamron lenses can be found on craigslist real cheap.

I will be nice and not comment on the rest of the stuff.

You'll like the 55-250. It's decent glass for an introductory zoom. I do think it's a bit redundant with what you already have in the 70-300, obviously, but it is a better lens, IMHO, if you would consider parting with the 70-300. I'm in the market for a 70-200 f/4 L IS and when I find one, my 55-250's outta here. ;)

I really think you oughta consider the 18-135 that comes bundled. For the bundled price, you can't beat that lens and it has a VERY nice range by itself. For many people, it could easily be the only lens they ever need, depending on aspirations, of course.

I recently purchased an EF-S 17-55 2.8 and I love the lens, but even with the 2.8, I'm hard pressed about my walk-around at Disney after shooting with the 18-135 for a few days. Don't get me wrong, I love the light gathering from the 2.8 but there's a lot to be said for the range of the 18-135. Some days, it's going to be a tough but enjoyable choice to have to make. :)

I was trying to be nice but you just about summed it up. LOL
