What movie would you call "universally loved"?

ET popped right into my head.

Grease

I have some other unconventional possibilities:

Jaws
Airplane!
Field of Dreams
Superman
National Lampoon's Vacation
Caddyshack
The Godfather

I like E.T.

The first one I thought of was The Wizard of Oz though. Does anyone dislike that movie?

What about Shawshank Redemption? It is my personal favorite movie and the #1 movie on IMDB.

Edit: I noticed all of the prior movies were much more happy, feel good family type movie. Can a movie be universally loved if it does not fit that category? I think so.

ET was the first movie that popped into my head...ironic, because I really don't like it myself, but that's the one people tend to fawn over.

I LOVE Shawshank, and another of my all-time favorites is "Trading Places."

This is freaky for me, because I had "Shawshank Redemption" as my current choice as an adult. It was like you were clairvoyant or something. ;)

As a kid, I remember the movies were on TV as events, since this was before the days of VCRs and later, DVDs. And the movies I loved to watch were "The Wizard of Oz", "Sound of Music", "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", and for the holidays: "Miracle on 34th Street" and "It's a Wonderful Life". (I would add "Christmas Story" to that list now!)

I'm glad that I'm not alone thinking highly of "Shawshank Redemption".

I agree with Back to the Future and Grease. Love Grease. BTW, I think I am the only person on the face of the planet who hates Its a Wonderful Life!! Kinda like pepperoni. Everyone but me likes it!

SO far the only movie I like listed so far is Groundhogs day and I only like it because the killing himself scene is funny.

Any number of Disney movies. My vote would be for Pirates.

Definitely not Titantic.
Maybe universally loved by women, but a lot of guys hated it because it was so sappy and romantic, and had a Celine Dion song.

My first thought was ET. Not sure how anyone can not be touched by that movie.
I'd also say Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
