WHAT?!? Mexico's military crossed our border???

Who said it was ignored?? :confused3 Once again the article I read said the US was aware of the helicopter. So is your beef that it wasn't made an bigger issue?

I still can't reconcile how this warrants a UN intervention. For all we know (and I don't think the military has any obligation to tell the general public every thing they know) the issue has been investigated.

Sorry even with 3 years of social studies and a few college debate class on foreign relations I'm still firmly in the "this is still one big yawn" camp.

I'll move on.

Maybe its time to make it a "bigger issue". It seems like a pattern, and not necessary to "fight the drug war" but at times, to aid the drug business.

You're right, there are many good men and women who would gladly take the job. In fact, I bet many of the border patrol agents who have become currupt were once "good" men and women who would have never thought they would work for the drug lords. However, show thousands of dollars to the border agents who are barely making enough to support their families and you evently wear them down. If the offer of money doesn't work, all the drug lords have to do is threaten to kill their family and you suddenly have border agents who are working for the wrong side.

There is no easy answer.

Add to that the fact that the US government has shown a pattern of selling its own border patrol agents down the river as soon as Mexico gets in a snit (Ramos and Compean are the most offensive example) and it's no wonder you can barely recruit new agents. It is truly a thankless task......Our own govenment doesn't even value the agents. :rolleyes1

By and large, people away from border states do not begin to grasp how dire our situation has become. DH and I come from families who came to Texas before the Revolution. Until 10 years ago, we never remotely imagined we would ever want to live (long-term) anywhere except Texas. Now, we are looking into other areas to retire and it is breaking our hearts. But we see where Texas is heading and we know it likely won't be fit to live in 20-30 years down the road. :sad1:

How does this affect the rest of the US? Well, apart from all the Texans coming to YOUR states down the road......Think of all the resources Texas provides to the US economy. Imagine "Mexican level" corruption being in control of those resources in a few decades and the entire country will pay a heavy price. Again, once the rest of America wises up, it will be too late.

You can laugh at us all you want, saying we're wearing foil hats, etc. But the truth is, we're on the front lines and you aren't. By the time reality impacts you, you won't be laughing quite so hard. :sad2:

I'm not laughing.

I don't know why people take low blow shots but some just do. I doubt they are anywhere near the majority, I just think they are the loudest and that many people are too easily embarrassed to stand up to them. I'm not.

I live in the Lehigh Valley of Pa and am far removed from what you all are trying to live with but it is still a concern to me. My DS12 just started Middle School this year and my DD11 will be there next year. I moved almost 100 miles away from NYC to find better life but Allentown is being over-run by gangs because our infra-structure and police are not able to deal with the sophistication coming in and now the mess seems to be spilling over into the surrounding area. Now we have a Casino and I am sure the tourists with money in their hands will bring all sorts of other criminal behavior into our once peaceful lives, brothels & bookies, more drugs, more gangs and more homeless. The Middle Schools are having 'gang prevention' meetings with parents but few recognize it for the problem it really is. We love it here and I never thought I'd leave but now have one foot out the door so to speak. The problem with not doing anything is that we keep losing more and more ground.

Where do we draw the line? To me the time to draw the line comes when we need to allow other countries to cross our borders to help with the criminals WE should be dealing with.

:

I actually don't understand the "Mexican level of corruption" statement.

If we can't teach our society this stuff it's no wonder Math is a mess. There is no smiley in existence for what I'm thinking and I don't think it's cutesy at all.

Wait, I also don't really understand this statement, just because you state that the kids today don't understand the UN their math is messed up? That is a pretty broad statement.

Excuse me Emom but everyone is on the front line. Texas is not the only state that has drug, illegal aliens or any other problem. Hell, I live in NYC where we had a real terrorist attack. Texas is no more important to the us economy than Florida or NY or California. And please spare me the "front line argument" because Camden NJ has been the murder capitol of the Country for a good number of the last 10 years and I don't see the national headlines about that? I guess because it's not al-queda or mexicans killing kids then hey just another inner city THAT'S totally acceptable.

You're absolutely right I have no idea of how it is to live in the border towns but you have no idea of how it is to live in the inner city so your towns are not the only ones dealing with ramifications of the drug trade or illegal immigration.

You guys keep saying that "nothing is being done" and once again I ask where in an article you've read about this helicopter intrusion was it stated that it has been ignored or nothing is being done.

Maybe it's just we feel that cops being killed in drug disputes are just as important as border cops.

Don't get mad at other poster or make incorrect assumptions because you don't like our response.

We need a big sleeping smiley. This is still one big non issue.

Why? Because if I saw an aircraft from a foreign country over my house with no explanation, I would sure as heck be entitled to an answer. Are you kidding?:confused3

Aircraft from foreign countries fly into and through our airspace each and everday. Are you calling the government about each and every one of them?

First of all, if they are commercial, they have clearance. We are not talking about commercial aircraft but a military aircraft that had not received clearance flying over a residential area. Are you as casual about the Mexican Army incursions as well?

Frankly I would be happy to take over one oil well for every 1000 illegal aliens and even then I don't think we would break even. How about sealing the border. BTW, Mexico doesn't have to INVADE. Half of their country is already here.

Woohoo! I won my bet! :thumbsup2

Do you follow the military aircrafts in your car to see where it is landing? Also, how do you know if the helicopters are from Mexico? Where is this notorious article?

This is becoming tedious. Since you ask pointedly I will try and answer more pointedly.

If our schools are incapable of teaching our students (who one day grow up to be adults) basic civics ideas then it is not surprising that more sophisticated and less concrete ideas elude them... such as those present in Mathematics.

BTW, I am having a really hard time believing these questions are genuine so from here on in I'm going to ignore them as an attempt at heckling. If they are genuine then I'm kind of at a loss for words.

Anyone else out there remember the line in "Shawshank Redemption" about being purposefully obtuse? How did it go? "Obtuse. Is it deliberate? ", :rotfl2:

That there is some fancy footwork.... actually no, not really but it is sort of amusing.

None of this has anything to do with a helicopter from Mexico crossing the border.

And this POLITICAL Discussion now has taken many different tangents. I guess politics isn't taboo anymore on the DIS.

What on earth are you talking about?

This is only about that event. I can't help it if other posters bring stuff off tangent, conversations meander. That's the nature of a conversation. But I have been trying very hard to stay on topic. The topic is totally about the helicopter incident and why a bigger deal wasn't made over it. I wasn't the one offering reasons why the event was allowed to happen. In fact, I'm still hoping there will be a news conference about it and a nice big fat investigation. Tomorrow is Monday and I am optimistic.

I read something in the news and most posters have been on here telling me the reasons why it shouldn't be a big deal. So those reasons get a bit of discussion.

I do not think it's cool that you come in here and stomp all over the thread throwing the big 'P' word around. Not every idea that causes opinionated responses deserves the big 'P' word.

If you saw a foreign helicopter over your house in Ct, you should get an explanation but your house isn't a few hundred feet from the border.

Nope, just those pesky Mexicans.

Where is the link to this article? This elusive notorious article that is causing the mess? Some kind of proof that needs to be read closer.

Isn't it true the the FAA is supposed to clear each and every single entity that shows up in our airspace without exception?

Well, the only exception being birds ect I suppose.
