What looks better - white or painted ceilings?

I'm in the middle of re-painting my entire house. We've had "builder's white" for 4 years and I'm tired of it. Anyhow, I'm not sure if I should paint the ceilings or leave them white. Everyone seems to have a different opinion. We have high ceilings (10 foot in most rooms) and only north and south facing windows. The colors I'm putting on my walls are muted naturals, like soft sage and light cinnamon. I don't want to be trendy, just wondering what would look the best. Thanks for your help!

Since you have high ceilings, I would paint them. However, I would probably paint them just one shade lighter than the walls. Some of my friends have done this, and I think it looks great. I don't really like a stark white ceiling, unless the ceiling height is low.

I recommend the same. Take the wall color and get the lightest shade of that color for the ceiling. It will make your room look warmer.

I would either leave them, or do the same as was already suggested -- paint them a lighter shade of the same color.

The trend is definitely toward painted ceilings. I, myself, like them painted, but in a soft, lighter shade than the walls. I'm not crazy about dark ceilings, even if they are 10-ft. or higher.

I agree with SilverLily. Since you are painting the walls in muted shades, I think a shade or 2 lighter would be really pretty.

Oh gee, I must be the only one with white painted ceilings! I love ceilings painted white....I'm always one step behind everyone else, aren't I?

I'm a fan of white ceilings as well. I think it makes a room look bigger. I supoose if it's a large room. or you have very high ceilings, then doing the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall color would be nice as well. My house is a very basic Cape Cod style, with average size rooms, so I went with the white ceilings.
