My son saw a snake yesterday. It was black with yellow markings along the lower portion of its sides. He said that the yellow markings were more like slashes than continuous lines. (I am wondering if the snake's position gave the illusion that the yellow markings were not continous.) The snake was coiled but did not raise its head. We live in Maryland on the eastern edge of the mountains. The area is wooded. I thought it might be a ring-neck but DS said there was no ring around the snake's neck. Now I am thinking maybe a queen snake. What do you think?

I wanna say a black king snake?

Hmmm. I will have to show my son these snakes when he comes home. I don't think it was the garter snake - the way DS described it, the yellow markings weren't that prominent. I never realized garter snakes came in any other color than green. I did search the yahoo site for the ringneck. In their picture, the ring around the neck was barely visable. DS said there was no ring around his snakes neck. Lucki bunny's also fits the description. He said it would probably have been almost as long as he is tall if it were stretched out - he's 4'3
