what is your vacation policy at work?

We use a combination. For high demand times like spring break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas we go by senioriy first BUT the same person can't take the same prime week/day off every year. So you don't have Mary and Jane always getting the week btn Christmas and NY- unless no one else wants the time off.

I was hoping that I could find out how many vacation days people earn after x years of service.

My small company offers 2 wks. after 1 year and then after 9 yrs., we earn 3 weeks of vacation. Now I've been here 22 1/2 yrs., and was hoping to see if I was justified for asking for another week off? Am I in the minority?

At my company, all full-time employees start at 2 weeks. You get one more day per year until you earn a maximum of 4 weeks. So after you've been at the company for a full year, you earn 11 days of vacation... then at 2 years, you earn 12 days, etc. When you get to 5 years of service, you're up to 3 weeks, and at 10 years, you're up to 4 weeks and that is the maximum. It is added 1 day per year though, rather than a lump "extra week" given at the milestones. I've been here 12 weeks and accrue the maximum (4 weeks).

All full-time employees also receive 5 personal holidays per year... so that's really like an extra week off (so 3 weeks for a new employee, 5 weeks for an employee with 10+ years.) We also get 8 "company holidays" when the office is closed.

19 1/2 years - 5 weeks

Ours is strictly seniority based, with 10 days advance notice. The 3major holidays (Thanksgiving, Xmas & NY) cannot cause a force. If it creates overtime & noone wants to work it
you have to work.

Does that mean that if you'd had a vacation booked for a year (deposits paid, plane tickets bought, etc), someone with more seniority could "bump you" two weeks before you were scheduled to leave? If so, I think that policy stinks.

I do think seniority should have some weight (like in a tie-break situation), but that system wouldn't allow a low-seniority person to make any firm plans more than 10 days in advance!

Actually yes in theory it does mean exactly that. However we are a pretty cohesive unit and in my years (27) it has never happened. Each shift is pretty good about coordinating vacation time. Union Contract

However I do take Thanksgiving & Xmas, I worked them for many many years for people with small kids, now I take them off.
 
Small office but if there is a dispute (only one at a time allowed to take vacation) the one here the longest gets it.

I hope not, in that case. At my place they ask that you let them know if reservations etc are part of your plans, and then you are protected. I know we booked several cruises a year in advance, told the boss before booking, and it wasn't an issue, but we usually took cruises in October, which is a time period that nobody else wanted time off.
 
Wow,only 2 weeks no matter how long you have been there, I bet it cuts down on employees too, I wouldn't work for a place that gave that amount of vacation.

Me either! It is obvious they don't care a fig for the people who work for them---especially the loyal ones.
 
I get 28 days of PTO (sick/vacation) to use as I want and then another 6 holidays. I'm a one person department and can take time as I choose so long as I can find coverage. I generally cut my hours by 10 in the summer months when there is no school (100 hours used) and that doesn't necessitate any coverage. I've been at my company for 20 years and was grandfathered into past earning ratios. You can no longer earn more than 20 days of PTO regardless of length of service.

Other departments are having difficulty with their vacation policies. Many have been turned down just because the company can't find coverage for them. Major holidays are 2 out of 3, alternating Christmas each year but to take a week when there is school vacation has been a problem. Any time there is no day care locally (school vacations and the last two weeks of August) it creates a problem, everyone wants it off. Contract states it should be by seniority but often the company refuses to give it to anyone, thus eliminating the problem.
 
I started my career in an oil refinery and they had a system that was pretty interesting. Since it was a 365 day operation, You could only pick one major holiday a year for vacation. so if you wanted Christmas off even if you had seniority you would not have first pick at thanksgiving or 4th of July.
And you could only pick 2 weeks at a time. a lot of the guys I work with have 6-7 weeks of vacation so you can't take all the summer weeks off. after you pick your first 2 weeks some one else goes.
 
In my office, we are divided in to 3 sections. No one in our section does exactly what the other one does (except for 2 that do the pretty much the same job. There are 8 of us, + our boss).
I had previously done that job so I can cover most of the other 2 desks, and I have the 2nd most seniority in my dept. We can choose ahead of time or close to the week. No one really minds when we take vacation as long as we find someone to cover our work that REALLY needs to get done. You will just have a lot of stuff to catch up on when you return. My boss doesn't interfere either. The only week we have to have special permission for is Christmas to New Years, according to when the pay week ends.

We start with 1 week's vacation
2nd yr 2 weeks
8 yrs 3 weeks
13 yrs 4 weeks
Not sure about when the 5th week kicks in
We all get 3 PH and 56 sick hours which can be used in increments of 2 hours (ex 2 or 4 hours) if we need to take a half day. Unused sick pay is paid at the end of the year.

I am self employed. DH gets:

10 holidays/If a holiday falls on a Saturday, they get a vacation day to use within 6 months.
1st year-prorated/1 vacation day per month/prorated PTO
2nd year-2 weeks vacation/7 PTO days (can be used for vacation)
4th year-3 weeks vacation/7 PTO days
10th year-4 weeks vacation/7 PTO days
