What is your state's Sale Tax? (also note what state it is :) )

I'm from Oregon where we have never had sales tax. Since its Election season, there has been a TON of ads about various issues including who voted to have a sales tax. One of the ads claims that their opponent will make us have a 8-10% sales tax. We can't think of a state that has an 8 to 10% sales tax.

Remember i'm asking Sales Tax not hotel tax like WDW is charging on the rooms. ;)

I am from NY and the tax is 7.25%. I recently lived in CT and the sales tax was 6%. I now live in Italy and the tax is a whopping 20%! I paid an extra $400 in taxes when I purchased my kitchen a few months ago, sure does make a difference when you are shopping.

Well I am not from the states but I'll let you know our taxes up here in the Great White North, Ontario, Canada.

8% provincial sales tax
7% Federal Tax
Total 15%

plus all your other taxes on top of that and it gets pretty expensive tax wise...grrrrr

anyway only two sure things in life are death & taxes..

Have a Disney Day !!

Total sales tax is 14%.

Yup, that's right... 14%!

Manitoba, Canada. 7% GST + 7% PST
(GST is cross-country, PST (provincial sales tax) varies province to province).

Bet some of yours don't seem so high anymore. ;)

We have other weird taxes and levies as well... for instance a 2 cent environmental levy on any packaged drink. So if you buy a 24 case of pop you pay 48 cents "environmental levy" and then you're taxed on that tax!

San Benito County, Ca is 7.25% not too bad. However the county north to us Santa Clara is 8.25% I am not sure about other counties in Ca.

Whoa 20% in Italy.. Yikes Debbi.. how far is it to the nearest PX??

6 here....used to be 4 not too long ago...I think...unless...time really does fly!!!!!!!!LOL

Over here in Australia we pay 10% GST, then we have rates on the land. Don't know if you guys in the States pay rates on your land or not, but we do & it depends on how much land you own as to how much rates you pay.

I'm from Oregon, too. I think a sales tax would have a hard time passing--- though we certainly need to come up with something to fix the major hole our legislature has gotten us into. I'm especially concerned about our schools. Our district will need to cut several weeks off the school year if the income tax surcharge doesn't pass January 28. We're already down substantially in our city since the passage of measure five. In fact, in our district we're spending about $1000 less per student in inflation adjusted dollars than we were ten years ago. We've had to close a number of schools here and our class sizes are through the roof!!!!

I was doing some research (we have a number of local issues this time around regarding property tax), and learned that Oregon ranks 41st for all state and local taxes. In other words, it is pretty cheap tax wise to live here. There are only nine states that pay less in taxes!!! Pretty amazing stuff--- not the kind of thing Sizemore would have us all believe!

Joan, the nearest PX is about 50 miles away. Good for some things, not for others. Perfect example, yesterday I wanted to buy a yard (or here it is a meter) of Christmas material and the Italian store wanted $18.79 a meter (which is equivilent to a yard) plus the 20%! My response....YIKES, and I promptly called my mom and asked her to go to Wal-mart and buy me some and then mail it.

8% in Buffalo. New York (Erie County) ..kinda stinky.
When we travel my grandmother has to tell everyone how much it is ...and noone cares ;) LOL!

Maine 5%

Food is not taxed (except for take out and restaurant)

We also have income tax and property tax.

6.5% sales tax here in Minnesota, but we don't pay tax on groceries or clothing.

4.5% here in VA, but some localities have local sales taxes in addition to the state sales tax. IIRC, the Hampton Roads area has one that boosts the sales tax up to around 9-10% (I'm working off memory here -- maybe someone that lives there can help).

That sales tax is in addition to property taxes, state income taxes, and personal property taxes. The property tax is on land; the personal property tax is on vehicles, and that is separate from the tag fee and the state inspection fee.

And yet the Governor is making massive budget cuts because of a budget shortfall.

5% here in Indiana but going up to 6% December 1.

The base sales tax is 6%, but then some counties add to that like the county south of me has 7% sales tax. Taxes of most everything except food and services (and then they started thinking about that after the downturn in tourism). No State Income Tax.

7% in my area. Sales tax is different per county in my area though-not just the state.
