We are looking for ideas for this July, in the United States, not a cruise, more of a resort type vacation for our family (which includes teenagers).

Someplace that we can honker down and relax, but also has stuff in the area to do.

We are considering booking AK, but may want to change things up and try something new...

Idea's welcome!

My family loves Washington, D.C. Absolutely so much to do. You can get a really wonderful hotel to give you a resort type feel and an awesome pool, then explore all there is to do.

San Diego.

Maui (don't know if you meant US Mainland or not, but thought I'd throw that out there).

We like to rent a condo in a complex with a nice pool setup, near the beach (the ones we like are across the street from a public beach with a full ocean view).

There is lots to do on Maui if you want - hiking, biking, snorkeling, etc. - or you can just kick back and relax!

just about any beach resort in the US will do for me.

The only problem with beach resorts (and maybe it's just my preception) is what do you do if it rains?

We've done Ocean City Md, Virginia Beach VA and if we get a rainy day where you can't do the beach, we haven't found much to do.

Are there nice resorts in the Williamsburg area? You can do Busch Gardens too.

Come to Hawaii! :stitch:

Exactly, go to Hawaii. After much travelling I can honestly say it was the most beautiful and relaxing place I have ever been. I cannot wait until I have the opportunity to return.

I say Hawaii too. Every Island offers something different. We are huge fans of Kauai. Been there 3 times. My kids love it too! It is more laid back IMO than the other islands but you can find wonderful things to do at them all

Ocean City is a drag, so dirty (and outragously expensive compared to Myrtle Beach) and nothing to do that I know of if raining. I've never been to Virginia Beach. Myrtle Beach on the other hand has plenty of shopping to do if it is raining.

Some things we have looked at:

A national park out west. Stay in a lodge and hike, etc.
I have a friend who swears by going to dude ranches
Smuggler's Knotch in NH has a ton of stuff and looks interesting

that said, we seem to keep picking cruises or beach vacations.

I second and third Maui or Hawaii. Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon, Monument Valley , Moab Utah, the Sierras in California, Alaska, Chicago, and more! Rain in Hawaii is normally warm and short-lived.

Gatlinburg,TN. Dollywood, Smokey Mtn. Natl. Park! Our favorite non disney vacation spot by far.

My family usually vacations in NH when not in Disney. There is a ton to do in the N. Conway area. They turn the mountain resorts into summer play places. Attitash Mtn. Has water slides and 2 Mtn. Coasters. They are so cool!!! My boys ages 11 and 15 love it there. There's also a zip line on another mountain. We also love a place called Monkey Trunks- a rock climbing, zip line park.
We love to stay at the resort at Attitash Mtn. They also have timeshare suites there for large families.
We have also stayed at the N. Conway Grand Hotel- really beautiful with outlet shopping in walking distance.
You can't beat the beautiful mountain views of NH- breathtaking!!!

There are some good suggestions here so far...

San Diego was lovely, many different things to do. Animal park, world class zoo, Lego land, DL and California Adventure a couple hours drive away, as is Vegas. The. You also have terrific beaches for lounging, relaxing, or surfing. Sightseeing includes la jolla (oh those lazy seals!), pacific beach, Coronado (first hotel to have electricity!), the Midway, Gas Lamp district, old town, Balboa Park.
We really like going to Door County in Wisconsin. It's the opposite of a disney vacation. We get a cabin on a lake that is surrounded in 3 sides by thin strips of woods, then Lake Michigan. It is cooler (wore a sweatshirt at night over July 4th week!), quiet. During the day, we tool around the shops, art galleries, fudge shops. We can hang out at the condo, read out in the pier, take one of the 3 boats that came with pit cabin out in the lake to look around, swim, or go fishing. For dinner we grill, go to a fish boil or a local mom and pop restaurant (because that's all there is up there). We spend a lot of time together playing games (pictionary, monopoly, charades). As a teen, my parents gave me and my sister a lot of freedom in the small towns to explore and just be on our own, which was exactly what we craved- independence. Last we went was 2010? And there was NO cell phone service. We had to go to a high hill near the grocery to use our phones and it was glorious!!! What a wonderful and refreshing break from our everyday lives it was!!!

We need beaches. Outer Banks or Myrtle Beach. We liked Astoria in Oregon but it was way too cold in July.

San Diego
Catalina Island, check over at the DL boards and the CA trip report has a big long thread.
On a resort note we spent a week in Pheonix (Scottsdale really)at a great resort, you could hang out at the pool or find lots to do in the area.

Seattle has lots to do for teens as well. Not sure about resorts tho.
