What is your favorite era of history?

I love learning about History and the past. My favorite decade would have to be the 1940's. I wish I could have been around durning that time. I also like the 1920's and 1930's and even though I probably would have died I would have liked to be a passenger abroad The Titanic.

I love all of history, but I always get a warm fuzzy for all the imagery of Colonial America. That's why I love Liberty Square so much.

Me too! I am fascinated by that tragedy. I wonder what the way of life was like on that ship and in that era.

The Great Depression to the Vietnam War... slightly morbid but oh so fascinating. I wish I could take a history class on just this.

Well, if you were a third class female passenger, the odds were slightly against you (about 52-48). (Third class children fared worse, with only one in three surviving.) But women and children as a whole were fairly likely to survive.

Though tragic, the period leading up to and including the Civil War most fascinates me. The war itself, not so much.

Yes, very facinating indeed. The antebellum south was brutal. Most people don't know that America used to be split into two different countries (North and South) with two different Presidents (Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln) and two different monetary currencies (Confederate tender and the dollar). Not to mention two different flags (stars and bars vs. stars and stripes)!! It wasn't just "north/ south" mentality, these were distinct and separate entities.

The Tudor period is my favorite. I read everything I can get my hands on have visited London several times & spent a few days at Hampton Court which was just amazing!

Coming in second is the history & tales of the Forbidden City, just fascinating.

I'm really interested in the 1930s-40s, specifically Hollywood & the film industry at that time, it's so fascinating to me, I love hearing stories and seeing photos from that time. I love the music from that time as well

I'm also extremely obsessed with the Titanic, so I guess that era as well, but more specifically the year. But I'm very interested in the fashion of that time (1900-1910) though, especially for aristocratic women, it was just so elegant and beautiful and ridiculously outlandish!! I love it! Rich people at that time totally fascinate me, they were so outlandish when it came to pretty much everything, but the fashion is just amazing!

Ditto. I've always loved that period of Tudor history. Cate Blanchett was marvelous as Elizabeth I. Loved both of those movies. Another great author for this time period is Alison Weir. She's written numerous books on Henry VIII and his wives, Elizabeth I, Elinor of Aquitaine and so on.

Currently my favorite time in history is the early Church (to about 800 A.D.).

I have been reading a lot of material on people like:

Ignatius of Antioch
Polycarp of Smyrna
Clement of Rome
Irenaeus of Lyon

I am also interested in the early heresies, such as: Monophysitism, Iconoclasm and Nestorianism, etc....

To me this era is so fascinating, and I had not studied it much before a few years ago.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I'm really fascinated by lots of different eras in history. Life as a whole, was so different 100 or 500 or 1000 years ago. When I was younger, I was very obsessed with medieval times.

But I think one of the reasons I enjoy WW2 history is because we are close enough to it that we can learn about it from real people, not just literature. I also enjoy it because it is one of the few wars that we can all seem to agree was fought for truly just reasons, and where the fate of the entire world was really at stake. The incredible sacrifices that so many people made and the impact that the allies had on the future of the world, is really astounding.

My all time favorite mini-series/book/movie/etc. is Band of Brothers. I've watched it 3 or 4 times, but what I really enjoy is the interviews with the surviving members of Easy Company. It's fascinating to hear about the experience directly from people who were actually there.

On a related note - has anyone else seen the "You Wouldn't Want to [X]" series of books? I found them in the store a couple weeks ago, and checked out a bunch for DS today. He'll need help reading them, but I thought they were a good intro to history for him.

Hi- huge history buff here!!

I love the time of Tudors and until Elizabeth the First. I especially love the American Colonial Era, the Victorian Era, and Civil War/ Antebellum South.

I used to be obsessed with the Renaissance and the Medieval time but slowly got over it when it seemed to be everyone's favorite!

EDIT: I keep having to edit because I think of more I like!! I'm such a nerd. Haha!

Final EDIT: Can I just claim every era as my favorite? I seriously can't pick even a couple as I have an interest in so many!

I love history and go through phases of fascination... I particularly enjoy Ancient Egyptian history, the Tudor ear, the Jacobite uprising in Scotland, the history around the Geisha in Japan, and right now I'm starting to learn a little Chinese history which I'm also really enjoying (love the Hungry Ghosts and some of the mythology, traditions, and beliefs).

I'm a history major, and studying to be a history teacher, so I absolutely love history. I enjoy American history the most, particularly the 60s. I am fascinated by most all history though. I studied abroad in Ireland last year and was blessed enough to travel all over Ireland, Athens, London & Paris. I loved every single minute of it. Standing on top of the Acropolis was an amazing feeling.
