This thread began as a poll. People answered said poll.

Starting on page 1, here come the folks calling this thread a "brag thread" and see posters who have simply listed their types of degrees as rude.

It is equally as rude to enter a thread and chastise those that have shared. Many people have said things along the lines of, "Well, my grandma told me it ain't nice to brag." Yea, well it also ain't nice to crap on others' accomplishments in order to get across your message of, "Just because you have a degree, doesn't mean you're better than me"...which, correct me if I'm wrong, no one here has said to begin with.

Color me confused.

Who in this thread has "crapped" on anyone's accomplishments?

Why does this type of thread irritate me? Do you think the thread would have started this way:

"I'm curious as to the educational status of those on this board. I'll start. I dropped out of 10th grade and feel fortunate to have my Walmart job."

Of course not.

When I was young I was taught modesty. You don't discuss things like status or money because it's boorish. I'm not ashamed of my education and accomplishments, but I also can't think of many situations outside of work where it's relevant.

I think the internet in general has made over sharing more acceptable to some people, but I try to talk on the internet only about things I'd discuss in person, and in real life I wouldn't introduce myself to someone then list my academic credentials.

Is it because the OP used the word "status" in her poll question? Because "status" simply referred to education, not rich or poor, hard-working or (whatever the opposite is), employed or unemployed, and so on.

No one here is oversharing. It's a poll question.

Of course most folks don't introduce themselves to others leading off with their academic credentials. But if they're asked, they'll answer, just like people have in this thread.

My Grandma always said, "If you don't have anything nice to say....."

(I'm agreeing with you...Not telling YOU "If you don't have anything nice to say..."

Well, thanks for anyone who participated in the poll honestly and those who responded simply. The thread was started out of curiosity and the motive was about as irrelevent as polls that are titled "Do you like ketchup?" ;) It's a community message board-people ask questions like this all the time.

As for the poll being braggy or crass-GET OVER IT. It's an internet message board. We are not co-workers, friends, we are barely acquaintances. But there are thousands of us that chat on here so often, it's really not all that shocking to wonder where everyone lives, what their education level is, marital status, jobs, etc... If you are proud of your education-wonderful. If you are ashamed of it-not my problem. Both have nothing to do with the motive of this VERY SIMPLE question.

I find the snarky comments so interesting though-I mean are you that defensive if I started a thread that said "What is your marital status?" It's just a question about demographics-plain & simple. Does that offend you as well? Because that question holds just as much water as this one.

....are you that defensive if I started a thread that said "What is your marital status?"

Of course they would. They love starting arguments. If you posted that poll you'd get a smart-mouthed answer like "What's it to you if my "life partner" and I aren't married?! Are you saying gay couples shouldn't get married? You hate gay couples!". You know that's the kind of BS that would happen. It's a shame too. I remember these boards from a few years back and they were not full of the snotty and hateful people like they are now. To be honest here, I was actually suspended/banned from here for two weeks recently and the reasons were, get this... "Minor Personal Attack" and "Argumentative/Sarcastic". LOL Does that sound like any of the people that have been posting here?? LOL Kind of makes me wonder why they haven't been dealt with.

I have two associates degrees, one in computer & network support from a tech school and one in general studies from community college earned with finishing my bachelors in mind. Only time will tell if I actually do that, though, because I was doing it more for personal fulfillment than any career aspirations and I can't justify the cost without any expected financial benefit at this point in time.

Now that makes me wonder how you know they haven't been dealt with. :upsidedow

:scared1:

Oh boy....

To me, it's like the questions that establish whether people are budget or luxury travelers.

It really doesn't address how much money people have, but how they spend it on travel. This question isn't asking how smart people are, just the educational decisions they've made. I know smart people who never graduated from high school and people that seem not so smart that have advanced degrees.

Personally, I find it interesting.

Because they are still here. Simple. There has been no gaps in these people's constant barrage of BS slinging. If they had been dealt with they'd be gone for a week or two at a time. ;)

Me too and I think it is just a way to get to know our fellow DISers. We have discussions on all kinds of topics, learning alittle bit about someone's educational status just gives us a little insight on who they are, where their opinions may stem from and why they know about certain subjects discussed here. I like to know where people here are coming from, it doesn't make me feel inferior if disykat has 3 PhD's and I don't even have an Associate's Degree.

Thank you. So do I. It's not like this thread asked "How much money do you have in financial assets?"

Well...how much money DO you have in finacial assests?

Actually, like most people these days, not much. I own one car and my wife owns one, one home (technically, the bank owns that for now. :( ), and I have a little savings. Oh, wait, I forgot that we're supposed to be bragging. LOL I have one billion trillion dollars and 10 homes and a Mercedes! :jester:

You have THAT much and you only own a Mercedes.....See kids...this is where education comes in.

Is THAT why a few people are so offended??? Because they think it equates to how much money a person has?? Wow, how ignorant, If that is the case, I'll tell ya-I may have a bunch of degrees, but I work for a poor public school district in a large city and my salary is laughable. Love my job and it's my own choice, but we are certainly not rich, not do we live in an "upper class" community.

My sister has a masters in Social Work and she is still renting because she is having trouble finding a mortgage company who will accept her salary as suitable.

One has nothing to do with the other.

Other - I'm 31 and back in school finishing up a bachelors. I'm pre-med, so I've got a lot of school left.

;) Actually-I have learned no matter how educated a Disr "says" they are-some post some idiotic posts here-Bankrupt & going to WDW, collecting unemploment and making 2 trips to WDW, sending an over the top "why WDW is an educational vacation" letter and not grasping how moronic it is.....I could go on an on.

So this thread is pointless

I have a college degree-my DH was in the Military during 'Nam, no degree and always made 5 x the $$$ i ever made;)

It may be pointless to you because you are focused on how much money people are making and what they do with it . I'm talking about who they are a as a person, not as a moneymaker. Sure a higher degree could mean a higher salary but one's educational status, their choice of degree and the field its in says alot about a person, not just how "financially intelligent" they are.
