My daughter is coughing nonstop. Honey is not working. Zinc elderberry lozenge not working. My humidifier is broken.

I read from a blogger that she uses equal parts honey & apple cider vinegar. She swears by it, I (thankfully) have not had to try it yet. Good luck!

How old is your DD? Is the cough bothering her or just you? For non-medication remedies, we have found LOTS of liquids help, as well as peppermint candy (crushed for little ones). For our allergy/asthma prone six year old I use musinex cough powder packs for children. Only thing that I have found that works for him.

codiene

but as of right now (in the middle of an allergy and asthma attack) I've been using warm liquids and ricola drops

I'm saving the codiene cough syrup for when I don't have to be sitting at the reference desk;) I also am a big fan of robotussin DM that really helps break up the congestion in my chest

try giving her warm to hot water with a few drops of lemon and honey, I use that a lot of times at home and it helps

Delsym is it OTC & works great & tastes good.

#1 cure for coughing that has worked for all of my kids was putting Vick's on their feet covered by socks.

Not kidding...it is hands down the best treatment EVER for a cough. Don't know why on earth it works, but it does. When my kids pediatric doctor told me that when my oldest was just a toddler I thought he was just trying to make me look like a fool.:rolleyes1

He wasn't kidding and it works.:cheer2:

I've tried just about everything prescription and over the counter this year for myself and the kiddos. I finally did the vicks vapo rub before bed. Worked like a charm.

What works for DD and I to stop our coughs at night and let us get sleep is to slather vicks vapor rub on the bottoms of our feet and then put socks over it (socks you don't care if they get ruined because they will turn grey). I don't know why this works (or why it has to be the feet, but it does), but it definitely works 90% of the time. We have prevented tons of sleepless nights in our house with this. DD can be coughing her head off, and I will go in and Vicks her feet and within 5-10 minutes, she stops. Works the exact same way for me as I found out one night a few years ago when I was desperate because I couldn't quit waking up coughing every 15 or 20 minutes.

In the short term, turn on a hot shower, let the bathroom fill up with steam, and then have your daughter sit in the bathroom with the door closed (do not put her in the shower while it's on!)

If she's been coughing for a few days, take her to the doctor. Especially if it's a "wet" cough.

the bext Rx I've tried for caoughing is something called "cough pearls" is the common name.

It helpes control your throat muscles to not cough and the reflex in your lungs that gives you the urge to cough.

I've used them several times and they have always worked great.

I second Delsym - comes in childrens formula - 12 hour day/night - my doctor recommended it, and it's all we have used for years. Works especially great when you have that dry tickle that makes you cough all night.

Yes, Vicks on the feet!!!! You can rub it onto their chests but the smell is awful. The bottoms of the feet have a high absorption rate so maybe that's why it works.

FWIW, I think over the counter cough medicine is garbage. I have never found one that works. I did get a script for the cough pearls someone mentioned when I had bronchitis and those did help, but you have to have a prescription.

Reminds me that I need to buy some. I always keep it in stock for coughs.

This! I have used it on all five of my children. Love, love, love it!

Regular honey doesn't do much but my pediatrician recommended Buckwheat honey. It does help. I mix honey and lemon juice together.

Hope everyone feels better soon!

As a person with bad lungs that is very prone to bronchitis and pneumonia, I swear by Mucinex DM (the 12 or 24 hour version - the 4 hour version wears off too fast). I don't know if they have a kids version or not - if they do, I'd definitely try that just given my own experience with the adult verion. And I warn you that the cough may very well get worse the first day or two taking it, because it is clearing out all the gunk. But once that passes it gets better. Several other folks I know with equally bad lungs also swear by it.

Buy a humidifier. We keep them going all over the house, all winter.

If the air outside is damp, bundle her up and take her outside for a few minutes.

As mentioned above, all the liquids she will drink.

Has she seen a doctor yet? What does he/she say?

DD had a bout of strep in September and even on antibiotics she developed a nasty cough. NOTHING was working.....OTC meds, humidifiers, Vicks on feet & chest, Honey. Took her back to the ped on a Saturday and they gave her a breathing treatment and a prescrip for Zithromax and that very night we ALL slept well. She had developed bronchitis. I say go have it checked. We know several kids & adults around here that have pneumonia already this year.

I know this will sound strange and a little disgusting but it's worth a try, it worked here :thumbsup2
Get a turnip (raw) and dig a hole in it (I usually slice it a little bit to make it flat on one side so it can sit on the counter) and fill the hole with regular sugar. Let it sit there a few hours and you'll see that, as the sugar melts, it becomes like a syrup inside. I use this syrup a couple of times a day, 1-2 Tb spoons at a time. This has become the best cough syrup ever around here...

I know, I know :scared1:

It's not as nasty as it may sound. It tastes like a sugar juice mostly.

I coughed for 8 weeks and the drs kept telling me I had nothing. Then I saw this old-wife remedy in the paper and tried it. It took about 3 days. Once you're desperate enough, you might try it :rolleyes1

Good luck! Hope the night was not too bad
