What is your child's school doing for Haiti?

Some of the other teachers at my school and I are trying to coordinate some ways to help the relief effort in Haiti. If your child's school is doing something, could you share? We are definitely going to put out a big water jug in the lobby and encourage students and parents to contribute, maybe even make it a kind of contest to see whose class can collect the most. I'd love more ideas, things that kids could be a part of. The kids are PreK-5th grade.

Nothing that I know of. :sad2:

I don't know yet, I haven't asked the kids. I am sure something with get put in place next week. Our church is taking up a donation this weekend and my company just donated $100,000 and is starting a fund for employees to contribute and they will match that contribution.

Nothing has come home yet but I have no doubt they will be doing something and we'll probably have all the info next week.

Do you guys have a place to take the stuff you are collecting? The only reason I'm asking is because cash is easier to help with the relief. When people collected items for hurricane disasters, they had to find someone who would distribute it or distribute it themselves.

I'm a Girl Scout leader, and one of my 4th graders just emailed the group (love these girls :lovestruc) Our scouts normally brings $1.00 dues to their meeting. Being that it is girl led, we ask that they *earn* it. For ,it comes out of their allowance, for others, they do an extra chore at home and mom pays them.

She sent her email, asking all her sister Girl Scouts to do extra chores this week, and earn extra dues to send to Haiti.

Here in the Houston area, we can take donations to our grocery store, Randalls. I imagine, in most localities there will be a donation area for red cross that makes donations easier.

What I love about what this girl proposed, is it is something that kids like herself can do to "help"

My ds goes to a religious school that is associated with a church (not ours). They had dress down day yesterday instead of wearing uniforms. Any amount was accepted. I think its going to be divided between a missionary couple already in Haiti that the church supports and the other part is going to World Vision, they are already on the ground there and one of the ds classmates dads works for the organization. I am sure they will do other stuff too since a group of kids is and hopefully will still be going in 2 months for a missions trip.

The water jug IS for cash and change. I am looking for other ways to raise money, not collect things. I know that the things people need now can be best provided by charities already working there, but they need more financial support.

Like luvmarypoppins, my DS goes to a religiously affiliated school and they are collecting money each day next week. They asked for the kids to give as generously as they can, but at the very least give up what they would spend for lunch each day, $4/$5.

The money will be collected as part of an organizatin I feel comfortable with that it will actually go directly to where it's needed, something I am concerned with.

My DDs' school has not set anything up yet...

My DD had a Colts day yesterday. Its a uniform school, but if they paid a dollar, they could wear a Colts shirt over their uniform shirt. They only made 1 anouncement the day before and raised over $300! She thought that was pretty good since it was such short notice.

How about penny/nickle/quarter wars? Each room/grade/or combination of grades (say prek-3, and 4-5) gets a jug. Every penny/nickle/quarter - whatever you decide - counts toward that group. All other money counts against them. So each group wants to put as many of the designated coins in their own jug as possible, while adding other denominations to the other jug. Have a prize for the group with the greatest amount of the designated coin, minus the other denominations.

Sounds a lot more complicated than it is.

We have uniforms and only have a two-day week next week. We're having Jean Days for $1.00. They still have to wear their uniform shirt, but can wear blue jeans instead of their regular slacks. We do this for Relay for Life as well once a month and generally raise about $450 doing it, so it'll be close to $1000 for those two days. (They really like wearing jeans!)

No but when I saw the amount they were donating I thought "I wonder if they are following Disney's lead". :lmao:

Nothing that my kids know about. OUr church has a sister parish in Haiti. The priests from there come to our church and speak every so often. I'm sure we'll be getting an update tomorrow. I hope it's nothing terrible.

At my DD's high school - one of the clubs is selling some sort of chocolate hearts to be delivered on Valentines day - with all proceeds benefiting Haiti.
Yes - I realize you are trying to find ideas for elementary school...but I don't have any kiddos that young.

When my DD was in elem - one of the things they did to raise money was to have a popcorn Friday's. The school had a popcorn maker, and a group of moms (although it could be dads too!) would make/distribute the popcorn.

One of the other general fundraisers throughout the year was to a read-a-thon. I know another elementary school that did a 'jump-rope -a-thon' too.

Good Luck!

I'm not sure if DGD's school is doing anything at all.. As of last week, their big push was for students to bring food items to school; after school activities; etc; because the food pantries (at churches and such) and food banks in the tri-city areas are so incredibly low on donations.. People are being turned away at some locations - or given very, very little because there just isn't enough to go around..:(
