I'm just wondering what is the normal curriculum for 6th grade math. I don't want to be overly chopperish if I don't need to be. ;)

ok - I'm not much help since I don't know what the word chopperish means...guess I'll go google it.

But as far as my dd's curriculum she is dividing fractions right now.

I'm just referring to the helicopter parent thread. :) Thanks for your reply.

my sister in 6th grade is doing Pre Algebra in my brother is in 8th grade they give them regular Algebra for highschool credit,

I have my dd's 6th grade text right here. This is a summary of the chapters. Some of the topics (such as fractions & decimals) have more than one chapter.

--Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division

--Place value

--Fractions

--Decimals

--Measurement (English and Metric)

--Ratio/Proportion/Percent

--Geometry (various chapters on this)

--Statistics, graphing, probability

--Time and Money

--Pre-Algebra Skills

Review all math prior to 6th. grade and applying it to pre-algabra. Our 6th. grade math was intensive as it is a testing year for math in our state.

All you need to do is google your states department of education and you can find curriculum and state standards there according to grade level and subject.

yup, pre-algebra, depends on how far along she is...

i took algebra in 7th grade, geometry in 8th, Algebra 2 in 9th, Pre-Cal/Trig in 10th, Statistic in 11th and Laziness 101 in 12th.

My DS had pre-algebra in 6th grade, but that was considered an honors class.

Well, since my DD just came home with her first "F" on her last math test -- apparently not a lot! Actually she is a very good student (A's in all of her other claseses) she just struggles with math.

Right now she is working with adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and it is very difficult for her to grasp. Luckily, one of my good friends is her math teacher, so help is on the way!

From what my friend says 6th grade math is a big transition year where they take all the math they have learned and start applying it to algebra-like problems -- basically pre-algebra.

I have dd's book here -

unit 1 whole numbers, algebra & statistics
number patterns & algebra (which is prime factorization), area
statisitcs and graphs (circle graphs, line & stem plots, mean, median, mode)

unit2 Decimals
adding/subtracting decimals
multiplying & dividing decimals

unit 3 fractions
LCM
comparing & ordering fractions
writing decimals as fractions & vice versa
adding & subtracting fractions
multiplying & dividing fractions

unit 4 algebra
integers
adding, subtracting,mult,divid
solving equations

unit 5
ratio & proportion, percent
probability

unit 6 measurement & geometry
metric system
angles & polygons
lines of symmetry
similar&congruant figures
measuring area & volume

Currently Geometry. Last unit was Algebra. Our state has the third hardest standardized tests in the nation and my kids school is in the top 10 in the state for that test in her grade, so they have a rep to protect and it really just makes me . Do I get a "Thanks for producing such a smart kid"? No I get "We are working really hard to brainwash your kid, so you can't see her right now unless you get a form in triplicate..."

Makes me so mad how hard they push these kids and "teach to the test" instead of teaching so the kids can learn.

I really don't like my kid's school right now.. but yes, they are teaching pretty hard subjects to their cattle.. I mean our kids.

Looks like I need to sharpen my "blade" so I can crash the school and see my kid!
