So, I was at brother's yesterday for the 4th of July. He lives in a nice middle class neighborhood that is right next to the park where his city sets off their fireworks. Pretty much everyone in the neighborhood has family and friends over and then they watch the fireworks from their yards. It is also very common for people to set off fireworks in their backyards (including my brother) even though it is illegal in Ohio. It's a strange law. We can buy fireworks in Oh but have to sign a form saying that we'll transport them outside of the state within 48 hours. I know that not everyone is careful when setting off fireworks, but I never expected to see what I saw yesterday. The people who live behind my brother were letting kids that looked between 6 and 10 light the fuses. Not only that but the little ones were holding Roman candles while some of the older ones lit them. It was bad enough when they had some parental supervision, but at one point all of the adults left and went to visit some people a couple of yards down leaving the kids to do the fireworks on their own. Why on earth would you even let your six year old hold a lighter let alone light something that's going to explode? I know some parents do crazy things. I just never expected to see a parent put their childs life at risk so easily.
I would never leave DS5 alone to do fireworks by himself. What are some people thinking these days?!?
... that is just crazy!
Hi Ohio neighbors! We had some friends over Monday night for burgers and dogs. The guys were lighting fireworks in the yard. We made all the kids stay/play on the deck while the guys were setting them off. There were some little ones sitting near us at the public display last night playing with sparklers and the little boy burned his thumb touching one that was hot and the little girl burned her foot stepping on one that was just put down and still hot. She was in bare feet.
