What is up with Shrek 4D's chairs?

We recently got back from our universal trip and was really surprised by the chairs in shrek. I think they would be better by getting rid of those awlful chairs. Everytime they move you hear that very loud air compressor release sound that almost over takes the sound of the movie playing. I found by the middle of the show I was dreading the chairs having to move again cause of the sound they make. Those chairs are WAY to loud. Can't they try a different mechanisim? :sad2:

Gotta say, I've never thought about the noise that the seats make as being distracting. I always just thought of it as a galloping noise.

I have to agree. My first thought was that they just never bothered me? :confused3

Honestly, I've never noticed that they make a lot of noise. Maybe there was something wrong with the area you were in?

Have to say I am shocked by the replys. I thought that the sound was way to loud. Unless I was by some chairs that where not working right it was to loud. My mother in law uses an air compressor for her upholstery job and those chairs sounded like she was shooting staples very fast and having the air compressor releasing air rapidly. Didn't find it anything like horses galloping. Well over all I liked the show but wouldn't do it again cause of the chair mechanisum.

I know the sound you are talking about but I never thought of it as loud and annoying. To me the sound is supposed to be there since it happens when the horses are running and to me the sound is part of the show.

When I watched it in the main theater in the front, I never noticed it being a problem. When I watched it in the second theater in the back, the air compressor noise was noticeably louder and made the dialogue much more difficult to hear.

Were you in the second theater by any chance?

I did not know there was more then one. Is there a way you can tell if your in one or the other? We went first thing in the morning. Think we may have been the second group in since we stopped by the universal store first on the way in.

We sat in the row third from the back if that made a difference in the sound.

Were there a lot of empty seats? That might have made it noisy.

We usually sit at the back and don't notice the noise to be excessive.

^^Yeah, there are 2 theaters in the building. The 2nd one was added soon after the show opened, because it was getting to be the highest wait time in the park. The first one has the line run along the side of the building. When you're about to enter the preshow, look across and you'll see Jimmy Neutron and Rockit. The 2nd theater enters on the other side of the building. The first one is always used, the 2nd one for when the park needs it for capacity.

I agree, the seats are loud. I found it a lot louder if the seat had no one in it though, as the empty seat in front of me bucked like a wild bronco.

OP, I understand what you are talking about. I was there at the end of October and it was a loud air sound, nothing at all like a galloping horse. Sounded more like a semi trucks brakes.

Now I'm going to have to go this weekend and see if they have gotten louder... :rotfl2:

Could it be you were in one of the chairs that moves the whole time? My daughter's chair was moving the entire time! She said she heard them say there are about 6 chairs that do that but I didn't hear them say it. I didn't notice the noice myself, I was too worried about not tossing my cookies! The chairs were very herky jerky and I didn't prepare myself for that.

Yea, had that air release sound but constant.

When you look at the front of the building we walked along the right hand side and followed the line to the back of the building.

Yea, it was first thing in the morning so there was alot of empty seats.

I honestly can't remember if it moved 100% of the time, but it moved most of the time.

We were there last week and the seats do move most of the time (any physical action onscreen.) The theater was pretty much full and the noise from the air compression was loud but not out of character with the experience. What I did notice was when the lights came on how 'dungy' the theater looked especially the flooring (gum/dirt etc.) One thing Disney has on Universal is the upkeep of those 'little' items. Another example in Seuss land the 1-2 fish ride had a lots of peeling paint/rust that Disney would have addressed.

I wish I could say that Disney always keeps up with maintenance, but I've seen many upkeep problems there as well.

Just wanted to chime in and add how much I HATE the Shrek attraction. The queue is horrible and I find the attraction to be loud and obnoxious. The character voices are sooo irritating. My memory of the ride might be a little foggy since I've only ridden it two or three times. (Yes, I hate it that much) but I can't help and associate the ride with heat. It is so crowded that I think it feels uncomfortably hot in there plus all the noise from the seats and the loud annoying character voices make it all just a very unpleasant experience. I love the movie but the attraction not so much.
