What is up with Country Bears?

We have been to Disney 4 times. In those 4 times, we have done the Country Bears ride once. And never will we go on it again. It's incredibly dated, and incredibly awful!. Probably the worst ride out of all the Disney parks. We just laughed the whole way through because of how terrible it was. Worst experience ever!!!

You're right. It's the worst ride ever. Those wooden benches wouldn't even move when I was there.

Now, as a show or an attraction, I have a certain nostalgia for it. It's old. It's corny. It desparately needs some TLC. But I'll go to Country Bears before I'll ever go on Stitch.

I'll go on the Hindenberg before I go on Stitch.

was Lewis Carroll (aka Charles Dodgson) on drugs? I mean, he's the one that wrote all that crazy Alice stuff in the first place. I remember some discussion in college that he was on something. Or did he just like to write crazy stuff.

I always thought it was funny that during the CB finale when all the bears are singing the closing song in harmony, Big Al is still singing Blood on the Saddle. You'd think after all these years he'd get with the program.

Big Al is the best part of that show!! :cool1:

I have never seen any reliable evidence that he used drugs of any kind. He did like to take pictures of little girls (Alice's age 8 to 10 yo) in the nude. (True fact -- many of the pictures still exist and letters referencing it.) No indication he did anything but take pictures, and he had the parents permission, but seriously weird none the less.

In regards to Stitch - don't get me started. It's awful! Bring back Alien I say! Way more thrills!

Now, for some reason, POTC never bothers me. I guess the wenchin', swigin', and pig wallowin' seems more a fictionalized history whereas the Country Bears is an interpretation of a region of the US. Not sure why one bothers me and the other doesn't, but it does. :confused3

For decades pirates chased the women in POTC. Not long ago some PC group complained and Disney changed it to have the women chase the pirates who stole some bread. Ya, that must have been what happened in the days of pirates!!

Yet, they still auction off the women to the pirates, and how all the pirates covet the redhead, instead of the less-comely one up at the moment, which could be insulting to the Less Comely Non Redheaded Women of America Against Slavery Auctions organization...

This was our first time going to the "show" and was shocked at some of the songs the bears sang. There's one w/the 3 girl bears and they sing how "every guy that turns them on, turns them down" then the bear on the left singing about blood. "Blood on the saddles, great big puddle of blood" What the heck?
Isn't this Disney? and a kids show? These things went over my 5 year olds head, but really what were they thinking?

LMAO!

My family and I were thinking the same thing. I was actually going to post this if I ever remembered while on the Disboards. They should really do something else with the space, this show stinks!

"Blood on the saddle"

LOL

FWIW - I went to see this show many times when I was little, and truthfully, I don't remember anything about it, just that I really enjoyed it. I'll be taking my girls to see it on our next trip, and I hope they will enjoy it as much as I did. That, and Captain EO!!!

The only thing I rememeber about it from when I was little was the Buffalo head on the wall. I remember it creeping me out although it didn't frighten me. I took my girls to the country bears the last time we went and my wife thought the same thing as the OP and when I asked my girls if they liked it they didn't have anything to say. Recently one of them told me they didn't like it after they heard the word "blood."

Blasphemy. That show is a hoot.

Agreed. The satire is lost among the politically correct crowd, but I find its appeal to be timeless.

Agreed. My wife doesn't care for it, but that is largely because she despises bluegrass. The older kids act like they are being tortured, but also no surprise.

I love it, and my younger kids love it.

Disclaimer: I HATED Country Bears after our first WDW trip. Now, I "get" it.

The attendance proves otherwise.

I'm not part of the politically correct crowd, the show is just lame.

It kinda reminds me of the COP thread going on awhile back. Yes the show is a classic, maybe Walt had direct involvment in creating it, but it's just boring. However, I'll take CBJ over COP.

Then my comment was clearly not directed towards you.

the show is just lame.

One other thing that shocks some people is that this lame attraction was an E ticket along with, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Small world.

WDW+1978+E+ticket.jpg

Disney fanatics aren't shocked by this because many know that the E-Tickets were high tech attractions in their time. But now a high tech attraction is just a simulator with a movie screen. Wow.

I enjoy the County Bears. The show is something we do every time (EVen though the times we've been with family and friends they've always wanted to wait outside) and we just have fun. I can see how more modern teens would think it's lame however (Watch "A Goofy Movie" and see what Max thinks of Lester's Possum Park) nonetheless I do enjoy enjoy it and always will. Hope it doesn't get sacked anytime soon.
